What siren should I record in Illinois March 1st?

Tue Feb 16, 2016 6:50 pm

NOTE: The desktop version doesn't work for me on this site as I'm using an ipad so it won't let me create a poll

But on March 1st the juniors at my school are taking the ACT on March 1st and me not being a junior meaning I most likely won't be doing anything that school day and knowing it's on the 1st Tuesday of the month which is exactly when the state of Illinois tests. What should I record in the northern Illinois area? My top 5 interests (not in order) are below. I have more in mind but I thought I'd just narrow it down to five:

- Whelen 4004 in Gurnee IL near the Gurnee Mills Parking Lot
- ASC T-128 in Skokie IL on the top of the Westfield Old Orchard Parking Garage
- ASC T-135 AC/DC in Rockford IL (not sure which one exactly)
- ACA P-50 in Schaumburg IL
- Federal Signal MOD6024 in downtown Chicago IL on Wacker and Madison

It seems you don't live close to Joliet/Plainfield, which is kind of a bummer, for I would say to come down here to record one of Dresden's newer T-135's with me and Federal Thunderbolt (on YouTube), as we were planning on heading there for the test. I would say Schaumburg's P-50.

Go for the one in downtown Chicago. It should have awesome echo while sounding.

Depending on which Modulator you planned on recording if you do go downtown, I think you should try recording a DSA, as I do not believe there are many of Chicago's DSA's on YouTube. The only reason I would say not to go there is that their test is only for 30 seconds and I think a longer recording would make a trip like this more worth while. But in the end, it is not my decision.

It might be cool to do the New Mod's at O'Hare Airport. You could easily do this from the O'Hare Oasis on the Tri-State Tollway. You would probably get good ambiance of other sirens too. Such as the P-50 in Elk Grove Village on the other side of the airport and Schiller Park's STL-10. Another interesting one if you want to go downtown would be the 2001 at the corner of Wabash and Harrison. It is literally in front of a building and would probably make for an interesting echo. In the city's defense on placement, the siren was there long before the building.

I am considering to get one of the new Mod's at O'Hare in future.

Yeah after watching Noie's video, the Chicago Mod just cuts off which is dissappointing but depending where the DSA's are in Chicago I can get one in the future too.

Come to Porter County with me for the inaugural test of their new ASC system ;)

In all seriousness, I second Brendan Ahern's choice of a 2001 downtown. LaSallle and Hubbard in River North would be a good choice as well, lots of tall buildings. Another cool one would be the DSA I just recently located in the clock tower at Marovitz Golf Course.

Okay it doesn't look I can get out to Rockford so I will only be getting something in either Lake or Cook county. The one with the most votes is the one I'm going to record on March 1st. The final results will be revealed on February 29th. I have personal messaged those siren enthusiasts I know not on the board of what I should get so whatever you see here may not be accurate. So here's the updated list including some other suggestions listed above:

- P-50 @ Schaumburg IL
- ASC T-128 @ Skokie IL ((Westfield Old Orchard Parking Garage))
- Whelen 4004 @ Gurnee IL ((Gurnee Mills Parking Lot))
- Modulator @ Chicago IL ((Wacker and Madison))
- Modulator II @ Chicago O'Hare International Airport ((Parking Lot E))
- DSA in Chicago IL ((either the Clock Tower or Soldier Field))

The clock tower DSA hasn't been confirmed a DSA yet. We should meet up sometime in the summer to film a MOD II at Ohare since I'm 4 miles east of the nearest one. I'd go with the MOD on Wacker and Madison. The echoes would be cool!

It depends, which signal does each of the choices sound in?
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.
