A question about dogs and sirens

Sun Mar 25, 2007 7:28 pm

I can't answer the ? why dogs howl when sirens are sounded.

However, I experienced that many times in the past.

I fomerly lived in Smyrna, GA(Atlanta area), which for many years tested its sirens(STH-10s..3 Whelens and couple of 2nd hand Tbolts added after I moved away) every Saturday at noon.

One of the sirens was about 3 or 4 blocks from my house; I could hear it inside with the windows closed.

My next door neighbor had 3 Gordon Setters in her back yard. Every Saturday when the sirens revved up to full speed the dogs would go crazy..they'd howl, howl, and howl.

When the sirens cut off, we could hear another couple of them winding down; the dogs would continue howling during the wind down..and STH-10s have a long wind down!

Are you close to the siren?
Is it an electronic siren?
If so, could it have an inaudible high frequency to which she reacts?
Well, for one thing I think the city should use Her as the siren, she sounds just like them, I live near 3 different types of sirens, a federal 3t22, thunderbolt 1003, and a 2001. She does a near perfect impression of the 3t22. I guess siamese cats naturally sound like that.
I can't hear you! *air raid siren sounding* Ok I can hear you now.

Aha! A dog that can howl dual-tone! As for my dog, a Schnauzer-terrier mixed breed, I've noticed that she howls more in the wind-down that in the wind-up or actual tone. Can anybody provide a theory on why this is?
If your siren is a-failin'
Chances are that it's a Whelen
And if it's just about to die
Then it must be an ATI

If you have seen my YouTube video of the Sterling siren in Silverton, Oregon, you know how high-pitched it is. The old part of town where the siren is mounted is in a bowl-shaped valley about 1/4 across, with houses on the crests of the hills east and west of the downtown core. After the siren sounds each day, you hear a chorus of howling dogs coming from all directions and from the hills that lasts for several minutes. Unfortunately, you can't hear them on the video.

They howl because they think they are hearing their alpha wolf ( the leader of the pack) is calling them and they try to respond. Sorry if this is a massive bump.
If a wolf is at a siren test, chances are its me :eclipse: :hurricane: :mod: :vortex: :banshee: :3t22: :TBolt: :P50: :2001:
