Wow, that's nuts!! The Decots never went beyond fifteen horsepower, did they? The production Red Arrows' volume rating goes anywhere between 120 and 128 decibels at 100 feet depending on size and number of blades, very impressive for such small sirens.
You bet they did! My friend Bill Nagler from WI personally knew some of the family members related to Ted Decot. Apparently Ted did destructive testing in a pit in the floor of the shop and actually managed to blow one up with a gas motor as a prime mover. He wanted to see how fast they could get that thing going before centrifugal forces caused it to fly apart. Bill also has a list of locations where the vast majority of Decots were installed. I think you would get a kick out of talking to him.Yes - Mr. Decot ensured that every customer was happy with their Red Arrow siren, no "defective" sirens were to be sold.
He also had a testing chamber pit beneath his machine works where he tested each siren to ensure it didn't explode when operated.
He probably saw this video:SoundMaster 391 wrote:Is this the Decot you were talking about? The video quality isn't the best but you can still see it. Are there any photos of this siren SuperBanshee?SuperBanshee wrote:I've spoken to Bill on many occasions, although that was years ago. He had lots of great information regarding the Red Arrow sirens.
He also did a good job renovating Prairie du Sac's Red Arrow siren. It originally came from the city of Verona. The pole mount setup is very clever - most of these sirens were originally mounted on roof tops or towers.
