Daren Illinois Tri-State Fire Protection District #2 ACA Hurricane-130 Images

Fri Apr 29, 2016 10:41 pm

Hey Guys,

Just went to Daren Illinois to see the ACA Hurricane-130 siren. It was amazing. Never knew it was going to look that big. The horn looks gigantic. Sadly it wasn't a sunny day so I didn't get the proper light that I needed to properly take the images. So I do apologize for the low light and the ACA Hurricane-130 was also painted black, so it didn't help in the image taking. Haha.

The black color was offered for cities who wanted their siren to blend in with the background. Not everyone wanted a big yellow siren sticking out along parts of the city skyline, so they opted for different colors which blended in more easily. With the Hurricane, its alternate colors were usually forest green, utilitarian gray, or black. I think there may have been a deep red tinge at some point as well.

Some cities and zones were not as consistent with this - Cook Nuclear in Berrien County, Michigan had a mix of gray and yellow Hurricanes.

IIRC, wasn't this unit restored?

That probably sounded amazing. Hearing three or four of them at the same time.

I know right. This ACA Hurricane looked amazing in Black. And very unique because most of the ACA Hurricane-130's were painted Civil Defense Yellow. So a black one is kinda rare. Especially a black painted square horned ACA Hurricane-130 siren. That's even more rarer to find than a regular circle horned ACA Hurricane-130 siren these days. Probably back than it was probably normal to find a square horn Hurricane-130 siren painted black.

They do sound amazing in a bundle. I was a kid growing up in Garland, TX and could hear 2 Hurricanes and 1 P-10 from my house. It was an epic ambience I'll never forget.

Wow that's a amazing story. I wish I could've heard two Hurricane-130's sounding at the same time when I was little back in the early 2001 or 2002. By the way I was eight in 2001. Just in-case if you were wondering. Were they close? Or were they like three to four miles apart. Those were the days I bet. Haha. Anyways I bet those Hurricane-130's are now gone sadly.

Yes they are long gone removed in the late 90's early 2000's. The P10 remained in service even after the ATI installs but was removed when the Whelen system went in. One Hurricane was probably 2-3 miles to my south-southwest. The other was 4-5 miles to my northwest. The P10 was 6-7 miles to my north. All rough guesses of course.

The hurricane 130 MKII is one of my all-time favorite sirens. Sadly, there are none in my area. Great pics! :hurricane:
My other ride is a 1950 Chrysler-Bell Victory siren.
