Rotator Box Size. Just a note...

Mon Jul 04, 2016 4:01 pm

Well I had an interesting surprise when I tried to put my rotator box panel on the old Bar Grille 1000 last night.

I didn't notice until I tried to put the panel on that the early 1950s boxes are 12" x "12" x 22" (see pic below)
There is no offset (extra 2") toward the non-pulley side of the box.

I got a 1/3 hp single phase Leeson motor from Surplus Center for this thing. It's pretty much the same exact motor
I put in my 1003 and in my original 1000 restoration rotator.

When I put the panel on, the fan (which really isn't needed in this case) end of the motor sticks out of the box about 1/8th of an inch.

Back when I rebuilt my first 1000 I discovered that the older rotator boxes are shorter (measuring about 8 inches) from the support plate
to the bottom of the box. I had to move the capacitor over to the side of the motor so it would fit. No big deal.
The dimensions of that rotator box were 22" wide, 12" tall and 14" deep with and extra 2" toward the non-pulley side of the box.
Later rotator boxes are about 9" from the rotator plate to the bottom of the box so a cap start motor will fit easily.

I always wondered what kind of single phase rotator motors they used in these things originally. Did they have cap start motors back then?

is it possible they used a repulsion start motor back then? Maybe a split phase motor like they use in blowers?
Down to a Thunderbolt chopper, still a few goofy flashlight-siren combos, and a Model L.
