Hello From Missouri - Federal Signal Clock

Mon Jul 11, 2016 2:40 am

Hello everyone and thanks for the opportunity to be here! I'm not huge in the world of sirens, but I stumbled across a few things and wanted to gain some knowledge and see if maybe I have something that someone else may need or just an interesting keepsake. Long story short, I was able to acquire a Federal Signal Model 5 and all of the controls from our City Hall. Siren was beyond help sadly and is long gone now, but I held onto the rest and honestly had forgot about it until cleaning the shed a while back. I sold the PGA timer to a Fire Department looking to fix their system. The Federal Signal clock is the piece that's got my interest the most here.. Is there anything special/collectable about this or is it a common and ordinary piece? Thanks for any information.

Pretty common back in the day, but that would be a long time ago. Not many around anymore IMO. Had one exactly like that in one of the VFD's I was on a few years ago. Used to be used for fire calls but in the later years was used for Tornado Warnings. Had the opportunity a couple times to hit that alarm button.

Those clocks were usually made by Verdin and used for controlling church bells or school bells. This type has one circuit that was used for a daily or weekly siren test. It could either drive the motor starter directly with an adjustable 1-60 second pulse (there's an adjustable cam inside) or send a pulse to an AR/AF timer.

That's very interesting. I never knew Federal Signal made clocks.
