Modulator in Cairo, Egypt

Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:13 pm

While I was looking at the photos taken by my parents at a recent trip to Egypt, I came across this shot from the Cairo Egyptian Museum. A funny place to install a siren don't you think?

You can spot the modulator here as well:

I never knew that Egypt had modulators.

Egypt used to have the British, who loved to mount sirens on short poles like this, using the sound reflecting off structures to help carry it. This was probably an old British-style pole fitted with a newer siren.

As are your posting habits (section 1 #6).

But since the second link wasn't embedded way back when, I'll save you a click. Look for it on the right side near the intersection, it's a Mod 2008:

Yes, Google Maps has other pictures nearby the museum from other users who are on Google+. Unfortunately there is little on their 360 views. I like the colour the Modulator is in, though. I am a little curious on what it is used for, now. Does Cairo have more than just one Modulator dotted around the city?

I didn't see any sirens in Cairo, and I was actively looking. All I found was a Kockums triple horn at a dock in Alexandria. I suspect that certain mosques, all of which have loudspeaker systems in the minarets, use their speakers for public warning.
