Why did some older Whelen Vortexes have weather vanes on the back?

It was supposedly there so that, in the case of a rotator malfunction, the siren head could be turned by the wind itself.

Actually, iirc the reason the fin-back was bad is that it caused tension on the motor, and it would cause the rotating mechanism's to break.
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

I always assumed the fin was there to place even wind loading on both sides of the siren so as to ease the twist acting on the rotator mechanism.
