This unit served downtown and East Topeka from high atop the South Western Bell bldg. at 823 S.E Quincy. I was downtown a few times when it was sounded for the Monday noon test...the ambiance coming off all the other buildings downtown was awesome to say the least. Shorty after I took this picture, as luck would have it, I saw a b/w birds eye view picture dated from 1960 of downtown showing the siren atop the bldg.
The bldg. now sits empty and is for sale, I imagine the only reason it is still up there is that it would take a large crane to lift it as the bldg. is aprox. 10 stories tall.

This is the siren from my old neighborhood located at S.W 15th and Lincoln...it served the College Hill, Central Park area of town ..this picture is taken looking South West...my Mother still lives aproz. 150 Yards South West of this siren. The power line has been cut for quite some time.

This siren replaced the siren that died a hero the evening of June 8th, 1966....at that time my folks and myself lived at the same location where my Mother lives today.....home destroyed, car in the neighbors tree... EF-3, EF-4 when it roared thru the neighborhood , couple folks lost their lives in the neighborhood.
The old Central Park Elementary School use to sit where the Robinson Middle School tennis courts are now (pictured)....the picture of the old Central Park Elementary is of the West side which would be facing the apartment complex (pictured)...the apartment complex was built after the tornado since the area homes were pretty much destroyed anyway.
There was a siren atop Central Park Elementary school.....before I took the picture I stopped in and asked my mother about the siren that was atop the school....she states that "it looked like the one up at 15th and Lincoln" I'm guessing that it was like the one that's atop the old South Western Bell Bldg. downtown....if anyone has any thoughts on this, I would like to read them as its been a mystery to me all these years as I was too young to remember the old,old neighborhood.
Back in the days before weather radios and such we really depended on this siren. If a Tornado Warning occurred over night after the television stations had signed off the air, it was all we had.....other times the sirens would sound a minute or so before any mention of the Tornado Warning was made via broadcast media .
