Loami, IL Siren Test Day Adventures

Thu Jun 08, 2017 1:59 am

So yesterday (Tuesday), my friend and I went down to Loami, IL to record their Thunderbolt on test day. Besides that, we were planning on determining if it was a 1000 or 1000T as the siren map for Illinois lists it as both. We got there about 9:30 AM and whilst looking at the siren, I noticed a Model 2 across the street at the fire station. We parked and since we had 30 minutes until 10 AM, we took some pictures of the Model 2. The whole time, the workers at the Shell gas station were watching us the whole time. As we were walking back to the Thunderbolt, they asked us what we were doing. We explained what we were doing and they informed us the siren is set off manually by the fire department and that happens half the time. After that, we haul back to Springfield in time to record the closest T-128 we could and we arrived just in time.

So I never did find out what model the Thunderbolt was. One thing I do know is that the blower cover had vents on the back which iirc it's a later model with a 4M or 5M blower. Am I correct in assuming that it's a 1000T? Here are 2 images of the sirens in Loami and the video of the Springfield test. Here's the Imgur link for all the images: http://imgur.com/a/88IqM

My first siren recording day turns out to be quite a mess. :D

Vents = 4M. 5s didn't have vents. But good call though and great pics! The only way to know if it's a 1000 or 1000T is to hear it...

That's what I was afraid off. I'm going to have to figure out the test schedule for it. I was quite amused by the PVC stand pipe. If I had some binoculars with me, I would have been able to read the tag on the siren. At least I know the siren is from at least the late 1960's. Although the paint job could use some major work. :D

The tag isn't always accurate either though... A: the early ones only said "1000" regardless of the chopper and B: it could have been swapped. Not saying this tag won't be but just a heads up :) what would you prefer it to be?

I'd take option B :D.

Sorry I was super confusing with that... B: the chopper*could have been swapped. Not saying the tag on this thunderbolt isn't accurate with its tone but just a heads up. Where you hoping it be a 1000 or 1000T?

My friend and I were both hoping for a 1000T. 1000s are kinda blah.

Ahhh. Yea I'd maybe contact the fire department that runs it (and maybe even ask them if they happen to know if it's dual or single tone.)

I did find this in the April Meeting Minutes on the Loami website. But none the less I'll contact them.
Trustee Mann asked why the Warning Siren is not tested on the 10th of each month. It was noted that the Village of Loami ESDA Coordinator is not available during the day to test it. The board discussed different ideas and it was finally decided that the Mayor would call David Butt, ESDA Coordinator of Sangamon County to see if he could set it off from the County.
