Lincoln Park, MI: WPS-2750 Replaced(?) By 2760

Sat May 04, 2019 1:16 am

I'm not too sure how many people here know this, but a few years ago Lincoln Park, MI removed one of its 2750's. The siren in question was located at the Plaza Center off Fort Street near Emmons St. This is a video of it when the siren was still in service.

Some time after the video was shot the siren disappeared. I don't think this was ever posted here. Someone on the Facebook page mentioned that it was removed back in 2015. Initially I though it had been either relocated or replaced by a nearby siren. Knowing the area I was about 99% certain it was indirectly replaced by a 2001-130, which would have been sad considering that WPS-2700 series sirens are pretty rare. It was removed between the time of the video being shot and 2013.

Something odd about the removal was that they didn't directly replace the siren with anything. It makes sense to mount the would-be new siren on a pole nearby for the ease of access from the street, but if you search around the general area there isn't anything there. For the last few years I thought that they removed it and never got around to replacing it. Well a couple days ago I came across this picture taken by Sirens of NE Ohio on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/162264125 ... 076699632/ At first I though it was a picture of one of the 2760's that were in the old Dearborn, MI system, so I shed a tear of Whelen nostalgia and keep on strolling. Out of curiosity I came back to the image to see how old it was, and to my surprise it was taken this year. I noticed the title said Lincoln Park, which threw me off for obvious reasons. So I looked up the location that was listed on the page and about spit my drink out. It actually is a 2760!

So yeah. It need to be recorded like last year. There aren't really any good videos of them online. I'm floored by this. It's kind of amazing that they replaced with with, not just another Whelen omni, but one of the same series and an exceedingly rare model at that. I'm not too sure if the system has been UV'ed like the others in the area since the StreetView isn't current (2018) and the picture lacks the controller, but should this siren still have the original controller it most certainly would be an analog ESC-864.

As you all may know the 2760 is an oddity among the 2700 series. It has a Type II panel like other 2000W and below sirens. I believe this served as a replacement to the 2790 in the series. That sounds far-fetched given that there would have been a 1200 watt reduction, but considering that the 2700 and 2800 series sirens were rated the same and that the 2806 was a 121 dB siren like the 2790 it doesn't sound that off. It would have made since at the time too. If I'm not mistaken the 2400 watt Modulator and Quadren were both rated at 121 and did it with less power draw, which means less amps and batteries. They used the controller equipped with the 2760 very early into the production of the WPS-2800 series but dropped it at some point favoring the use of a Type III panel for the model, which at the time was known as the WPS-2806A. Whelen still apparently makes 2400 watt versions of the Type II panel and will ship them with 2906's on a custom order.

Now the obvious question is where the hell did it come from. These sirens are stupidly rare, I would argue probably up there with the 2790. The old system in Dearborn has been the only one known up to this point to have 2760's. The model itself is shrouded in mystery so much that it doesn't even show up in the old literature. You can't exactly grow one like a tree, so the only place I could think of where they could have possibly gotten the siren from was WSS. I remember seeing pictures of the 3 2760's in their boneyard years ago, so if this did indeed come from them it more than likely is one of the old ones from that system. With that said I do wonder if they may have installed other sirens in the town. Between this siren and the other 2750 they are the only ones covering the area, and with this siren being located so far away from where it's original location was I thing the coverage had degraded. It would be nice if they were to save a few of the other 2750's and 2740's from that old system. More than likely they are still sitting in the boneyard though.

I'm relatively certain that the sirens are still on the original controllers, as they are independently owned and operated by the city, not on the county system. Their tones are still Whelen DTMF to my knowledge.

A few WS-2700 sirens are still in their lot, most likely from Dearborn. I know they still have some of Cook Nuclear's old ACA Banshees, Mill Creek Indiana's EOWS*1212, and some 3016s from another system, possibly Livonia?
