mystery siren from 1943

I was hoping someone here might be able to provide some more information about the background/manufacture/use (home? industrial?) of this siren. Appears to have been manufactured in Chicago, in 1943, by the Federal Electric Co. Model # is 6197-A. If anyone can provide scans of (or a link to) the operating manual, that would be fantastic - hoping to get this running again.

That's a federal blast proof siren. I'm not sure of the exact model, but you can look at Federal's website (fedsig.com) for more details. Never seen a vertical one before.

Exactly, explosion proof air raid siren, mostly for inside use I think since of its size, I think it's the kind of sirens that they use in big factories

Federal developed them for factories like steel mills where there was a possibility of fire (hence explosion proof). Even the military used them for things like battleships for sirens to warn everyone that the cannons were about to fire.

I have something like this. They're explosion proof sirens, I think they were used on naval ships during WWII.

I have a 1943 siren. Serial number 535. Model number 6197-a type is s-3 it is made by the federal electric company Chicago illinois. I was trying to find out more about it and how much it is worth. If anyone could help me out

The siren is 110. You take off the butt plate and there is electrical hookups on the inside. I seen someone was asking about how to get theirs going

That's a Federal Signal S-3. I have one and it's an explosion-proof siren and mine is also a 1943 model. They run off 110/120 VAC and were commonly used on cargo ships. It is *very* high pitched for that heavy thing!
