Long Island Sirens

Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:51 am

Okay, so tomorrow I'm planning to go out with my dad to spot some sirens and I had some questions.

Are there any active noon blast sirens out there besides Copiague?

When does the Mineola Thunderbolt do a blast?

Same with the Copiague Thunderbolt. It blasts every day at 12?

Thanks in advance.

There's a bunch of sirens that do daily blasts all around long island. It's a tradition for fire departments on the island to sound their firecall sirens at noon and/or 6PM. Bothe of Copiague's 1003's go at noon, and Mineola's 1003 goes at 6PM. Massapequa has some cool dual tone vertical HORs that test on Saturdays at noon.

Not every station tests at noon... but most of Suffolk county does a noon pager test that activates the sirens.
I recommend visiting carle place, NY. they have a rare federal sign and signal type 5AT.
Interesting story on the Massapequa HORs, They were originally Super Sirex s-15s, but the rotators on them broke and the fire dept made them vertical and gave them custom shrouds. I don't know if they currently go off, because The Chach told me a couple of months ago that they were temporarily disconnected (for reasons I don't know). Worth a try seeing one though, because there are only around 6 7/10 HORs left.
