TMI Cyclone - 2 News station videos

Fri Jun 29, 2007 4:31 am

You can see and hear one of TMI's cyclones in this news video

Sounds pretty much like a T-135 except it isn't rotating.
Here is another one with a cyclone too...listen to that wind up!

They have a siren at every "fire hall" and 96 other sirens placed thru out the county, and will not blow them for a tornado? WOW how ignorant! that EMA director is not all that bright. People don't know what it means because they are not drilled nor educated with the use of the siren.

that's absolutely correct. in the instruction pamphlet we're given every year, and in the phone book, we're told that the siren system is not only used for nuclear disasters, they're also used for (quote) "other incidents such as tornadoes, floods, or hazardous materials spills".

it's dumb to use the same siren for fire calls and TMI emergencies. that's just cheap. my town hears that cyclone do fire calls every day, and I can understand how it can be confused. this conditions people to ignore the siren because they're used to it being a fire call. some people may ignore it so much that if it did the 3-minute alert tone, they wouldn't even know. the fire department needs to have their own siren that does a completely different tone. even a diaphone wouldn't hurt.

it's also dumb to use 3 different kinds of sirens that make 3 different pitched tones for TMI incidents. it's dumb to replace all the sirens and install new 2001s when TMI's license to operate expires in 6 years. what purpose will all these new sirens serve in 6 years?

Well i can understand him not sounding it for tornadoes. When they interviewed that one guy and he thought it was the "Fire house siren" when it was really the TMI sirens...it would just cause more confusion. Now around here we know how to tell the difference between a fire call and a tornado call.

I can try. as I said, they only test once a year. I don't have enough advanced warning to be there when a fire call comes in, and they don't do the good old-fashioned noon test.

why does everyone want a Cyclone video? they're not rotational, there's really nothing to see. I figured everyone would want a Penetrator video before they're completely decomissioned and replaced with 2001s.

I can remember another place that had a very similar policy, and after an F3 tornado hit the county, all of the sirens, including those around the nuclear power plant are now used for Tornado Warnings. Apparently, it was misunderstood that the power plant units were "disaster warning" sirens, and after several people were injured, a few calls from their attorneys made for a quick change in that county's siren policies; hence, activating all sirens for tornadoes.

Sincerely yours,

Ron W.

Thanks for posting that link!

Evidently not all of the people know the difference between the fire call and the nuclear accident tones. That's not good! Obviously, they should do a much better job at educating the public in those towns. They could publish a memo on the front cover of all the phone books in those towns, and on the inside of the doors in hotel rooms, classrooms, and maybe a detailed page in everyone's sample ballot. That way, it should be cleared up.

The attack wail could be exclusively for nuclear plant emergency, steady alert for fire, and maybe alert for 30 second intervals/ 30 seconds off for tornado? Whatever the case, the public will not be served well by uneducation and confusion.

And foremost, they should test once a month! Jee-whiz; a bird could nest, the armature could rust solid to the stator, and a vine could grow all the way up the pole and choke out the siren in a whole year of non-operation :?
