Restoring one of Milwaukee's Gasoline Mobil Directos!

...I am quite impressed with what I have seen. I would put this on par with some antique car restorations that I have been witness to.

To be honest this is the nicest restoration of anything I've ever done. I'm big into "ride em don't hide em". I don't typically cosmetically restore my machinery. I will mechanically redo everything, but leave the paint and finish alone. This was the exception, and I want it to be the best specimen possible.

Quick Update. Was not able to get the chopper/stator media blasted this week. That will be a task for this week

I was able to confirm the proper installation of the spark plug wires. Will be cutting and mounting them hopefully tommorow morning.

We are sure getting down to the nitty gritty details! I have a feeling it's going to be a single spring, fitting or linkage that will keep it from running. Going to get really fussy from here on out!

Sunday-Funday update.

Was able to get the new spark plug wires installed! I used the original spark plug boots. The cloth covered wire really does look sharp!

Before adding the wires, I was able to get the static timing spot on!


Was able to get a couple of the linkages back onto the carb. I'm pretty sure all of it is there. Will have to review my manual.

Started fooling around with the rotator gearbox and secondary belt cover. The primary belt cover is super clean and straight. However, the secondary is pretty well smooshed. Not as bad as the battery box for sure. Was able to start to get it straight. Popped the spit welds and removed what was left of the face panel. Lucky for me I have a scrap of sheet that is the EXACT size and gauge. I will use the original as a template. Going to be a long series of heat and beat, but I'm confident we will get it mostly straight again

Also got the new fuel tank removed and the new pickup tube installed.

Stripped a good used 12v coil of its paint and repainted. I tested it on my Bolens and it works just fine

I just found out that the multi signal Mobil directo did yelp by using a solenoid operated rotor brake. It would be very cool if jerrylovessirens could build a brake solenoid assembly to make his siren into a BN52-MS-3 instead of just a normal BN52

Are there any pictures of this setup anywhere? That sounds pretty neat!

So about the projector, since you plan on getting the 1st gen allertor horn from West Shore in the coming weeks, what is different about the allertor horn than the original Mobil Directo horn? Are they the same or is there some slight altercations to it?

The Allertor horns are made of fibreglass instead of steel, which is less durable but is also corrosion-resistant. Mobil Directos also have a straight connection between the drum and the L-bend piece, while Allertors have a slight curve to the left where the drum and horn connect. The Directo can also have the L-bend removed from the drum, while the Allertor's drum and L-bend are all one mold. Otherwise, they're basically identical, and are compatible with each other.
