Stilwell, OK might have too many sirens..

I have been siren hunting alot and I noticed that Stilwell has 11sirens! Stiwell is only a 3.456 square mile area. Is it too much sirens or is it normal? Here are 4 of them I found but I have more pictures of the rest of the system.

I would think too many sirens is better than not having enough sirens! But yeah, that is a rather large amount of coverage for a town of that size. My town is 21 square miles and we only have 10!

You can never have too many sirens. Think about if one was cut by vandals or fell in high winds or 4th of July didn't go so well, we will always need redundancy. You will also need it because XT22s and model 2s have horrible range.

Ok, we used to have many model 2s but they were all (except 1) replaced
by Sentry sirens. I think the one in the picture is off of the system and just there but I can barely hear it sometimes! Hopefully I can see if I can get one of the older types.

If it was any other city just under 3 1/2 sq. miles , then I would tend to believe that 11 sirens is probably a bit much, but this is Stilwell, Ok. right in the middle of tornado alley...and they have seen some of the worse of the worst ever. Are any of the 11 just outside the city in the county? And of the 11 how many still function properly during a tornado warning. The residence of Stilwell and those dept's responsible for the sirens would probably like to add a couple more state of the art sirens to the line up if funding would allow for it due to the past history involving tornadoes.

It goes along like "once bitten, twice shy" only in this case one more time of being hit by a tornado, twice the amount of sirens. I would imagine that Stilwell, Ok. would welcome any private owner of a siren to become a resident, with open arms so long as that didn't abuse that ownership.

From information I gather from some friends that live right next to them, they all work beautifully. All of the sirens are in town and all working. 2 of them were almost destroyed by an EF1 last year in May. Those ones are lucky. Stilwell is indeed the worse place to be trapped when there is a storm so those sirens really help.

This reminds me of a small town in GA called Doerun. 1.301 square miles, 3 sirens. They have a 3V8-H, a Model 5, and a Sterling. IIRC I heard from somewhere they are about to install 3 more. It’s not evenly spaced coverage either as most of the sirens are in the downtown area. Imagine an ambiance of that… incredible.

Sirens were activated in April by accident and the ambience was amazing! I could hear a 14V, 16V1T-B, and a Model 2! I only just barely heard the SD-10 but it was still pretty good sounding. Never heard them for maybe a year until then. It is incredible to hear many sirens at once.
