How do people typically get their hands on sirens?

Thu Aug 01, 2024 4:12 pm

I know there are some people who sell sirens, others who make them and whatnot, but how do sirens get from being deactivated for years to getting auctioned or something?? Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question, but i cant really seem to find an answer online, and i was just wondering since there seems to be a lot of deactivated sirens in my area.

I believe another way to get a deactivated siren from your town may be to email the people who maintain the sirens in your area. That is currently the way I'm doing it. For the auctions, I'm not very aware of how those happen so I'm not going to say much. My best guess is that they want to get rid of their sirens in a different way. However, take my words with a grain of salt. Emailing the folks in charge is the only thing I've done so far.

Some people put up siren up for auction on this site from time to time, so make sure to check the marketplace board every once in a while.
Quite a talkative friendly fellow most of the time. Will definitely yap about sirens all day, every day.

Most of my sirens I’ve bought from places like eBay. You might have to wait a while for something you actually want to be listed, and potentially longer if you want to find a good price.

I have tried emailing a lot of people about inactive sirens, and I’ve only ever received a few replies, most of which say no. This might not be the case for all places though, I can only speak for the UK. Anyway, I know that quite a few people have actually ended up buying sirens like this, so it definitely is worth a shot.

Although, that depends on where you live! some municipalities, like West Shore Services, prefer for you to call them as they don't really respond to their emails. Trust me, I've tried!

And to answer your question, This also really depends on where you live. Depending on who takes care of the sirens in your system, you might be in luck, or you might not be. Some places won't allow you to take a deactivated siren no matter how much money you want to give them. Other places will, but it may usually be at a high cost. If you don't want to take this route, most places will take the sirens they've removed and put them in their graveyards, where it may be easier to obtain!

I was just lucky on how I got my Sireane Jr, My Grandpa found it in his tool barn one day and he decided to give it to me!

I'm probably the go-to person to learn about my city's siren history.

I got lucky during a site inspection for my job at a building that was being renovated. Part of the renovation was removing the old siren on the roof, which was blown down from 2 floors up during a strong wind storm anyway. I gave the guy pizza money and brought the siren home a couple days later!
