Lansing now removing their old Thunderbolts?

Sun Jul 28, 2024 7:40 pm

A few days ago, I was on Old US 27 when I got to the intersection of E Thomas St. Normally, there is a Thunderbolt on the corner of the intersection in the now abandoned school yard. To my surprise, It was gone! The thing is though was that there was no trace at all of where it used to be, and for some reason there was a full grown pine tree there now. I unfortunately didn't get any pictures, so I don't have any evidence to prove this. I do know as well that the Thunderbolt that used to be at the Willow street school before it was decommissioned and demolished Is now gone as well, but for some reason all the other Thunderbolts are still around as far as I know. (I know some of them are, but not all of them!)

Why are they being removed, and Who is removing them? I'm guessing that WSS removed all of them, but I'm wondering if the demolition crew that tore down the Willow elementary school removed it on accident, or even the people who removed the one on the intersection thought it was an eyesore and replaced it with all things a pine tree, but I have no ideas.

I'm going to WSS's graveyard in early August, so I'll see if they're in the graveyard!

Which ones? I've seen multiple that are still standing.

EDIT: Where can you find info about this? I've emailed West Shore Services about the Thunderbolts a month ago and they still haven't gotten back to me.

I'd love it if my local municipalities called me up to accidentally remove their sirens. A nice Bob Ross-style removal - a happy accident  It would be even easier if my wife would just let me have a 5-ton wrecker. Ugh, priorities suck!

Those old Thunderbolts are probably gone now for a few reasons:

- They require more preventative maintenance than many modern sirens, like rotator and blower belts and gearbox and blower oil changes
- They can't run when the power is out. The latest sirens can run on battery backup, and I think that's a FEMA requirement.
- Lack of spare parts. Maybe blower parts can still be found since some water treatment plants and other industries use the same blowers, but I'm guessing some other parts like the rotator guts are hard to come by when the sirens have been out of production for years.
- Municipality got a State or Federal grant to replace their EOWS with something newer, and sometimes that money is the use-it-or-lose-it kind. Plus if the money wasn't used, some people in the community may be like "WHY DIDN'T YOU SPEND THE FREE MONEY?" and people lose elections that way.

There might be some other reasons too but those are the ones I can think of.

I don't know why they decided to have to take them down either, they weren't in the way of anything! Maybe WSS would be nice enough to donate one of the bolts' to the Michigan History Museum for a new exhibit!

I'm actually going to West Shore this Tuesday (If the weather actually agrees this time). I'll definitely take some pictures of the Thunderbolts if I can find where they put them! Of course, if they have them. I'm not sure if Lansing took them down themselves and scrapped them, but I'm definitely guessing WSS took them.

If you're able, please take a somewhat in-depth tour video. I'm trying to see if they have parts for my project.

Thank you.

I unfortunately don't have a YouTube channel to post a video on, but I did plan to take many pictures and label them for info!

They fortunately were in West Shore Services's siren graveyard!

Here's the topic for it:
