SD-10 in Oregon City needs more information

Fri Oct 18, 2024 2:24 am

Hello! I just found out about this forum today and joined. I looked around for the info but didn’t see it or didn’t search the right term. Anyhow I have a Federal Signal SD-10 10HP 3 phase unit from Fresno Ca. I have yet to hear it. I haven’t found a good deal yet on a Rotary Phase Converter and I’m missing the starter and controller. As far as I know I can wire it directly to a 3 phase power source or through an AR timer and RC5 starter. I am not an expert on these but I am no dummy.

Does anyone here know if there is any other way I can get it working? Thanks!!

I'm in a similar situation, and I'm seriously considering a military surplus genset. A MEP-805a 30 kW genset would provide plenty of 3-phase juice for an old 10-horsepower siren, and can handle the current needed to get the siren going. Of course you'll need a trailer or something able to tow one of these gensets if they're already trailer-mounted. Running MEP-805a units start somewhere between $4000 and $5000 on GovPlanet then you'd either have to pick it up from the auction site or ship it. From what I've seen phase converters cost a little less than the gensets, but they aren't gensets. I plan on using my genset for other stuff too that I can't use a phase converter alone for, like connecting it to my home for back-up power.

Hi Jason, do you happen to remember what location in Fresno your SD-10 is from, and perhaps maybe share a picture? I live in Fresno, and I have a few locations in mind as to where it came from, but I was wondering if you knew.

Just one of many removed from Fresno over the years. I thought he said it was a bank building but I didn’t see one on this map I found online. Pretty clever, I don’t know how they did it.
