Tips for selling sirens on eBay

Fri Mar 14, 2025 10:39 pm

Hey y'all, I plan on doing siren sales on eBay soon and I'm looking for some insight as to what works. I know there's a number of active siren listings right now but I'm concerned that they aren't selling and therefore mine won't either, especially if I list them at over $1,000. What advice can you give me if any?
I record sirens when I have nothing else better to do.

I just took a look on eBay searching for "Tornado Sirens" and found a few of them have been listed for around a year and a half. Those sirens probably aren't selling for a couple reasons:

1) Few people on eBay are looking for sirens to buy

2) The sellers are asking too much for their sirens

I think eBay is the perfect place to sell stuff for what they're actually worth to people through auctions. Unfortunately, I think that 75% of the time an auctioned item isn't going to sell as high as the seller values it, especially if the seller wants it gone in a week.

If you want to sell a siren, I think you'd have your best luck selling on this forum or maybe another place where ship or fog horns are a big deal. Maybe even war memorabilia collectors might be interested.

To get an idea of what your sirens may be worth, you can look for sold eBay listings with their final purchase and shipping prices. I took a look myself and haven't found many "Sold" listings for outdoor warning sirens. I get the feeling that many of the sirens I've seen are purchased by others outside of eBay and the eBay listings are cancelled without selling on the platform.

That's all pretty helpful, thanks! The first siren I'm planning to resell is an Eclipse 8 which was in service for under 10 years, so it's still pretty valuable. Do you have specific suggestions for other sites where sirens might sell quickly? Ideally I'd like to sell to municipalities rather than private collectors, so sites that are more government-focused would be best.

Typically, public agencies and municipalities have to put projects out to bid, which involves them posting a request for proposals (RFP) which bidders respond to within a set timeframe. The RFP may have certain requirements of the bidders, like they may need certain certifications, insurance, capabilities, etc.

I'd imagine municipalities would favor new siren systems that have full-length manufacturer-backed warranties. Hmmm, maybe Federal Signal would be interested in buying it from you to sell refurbished to someone else?

there is a town here in Idaho called Glenn's ferry and it has been looking for a cheaper eclipse siren to buy. if you want to sell to them call the city hall they will gladly take the siren especially for how much a used one would cost in contrast to a brand new one.
