Well, I have some news. Good information regarding the McKenzie, TN tornado sirens was posted on our local newspaper (The McKenzie Banner) after several years. If it wasn't for all these severe weather outbreaks and city hall wanting to get people on the mass notification system, this would have not been posted in the newspaper. Oh, and one more thing, I like how it took them a HIGH RISK from the Storm Prediction Center for them to post it. Anyway, here is what was posted: "The City of McKenzie's three aging outdoor sirens are in disrepair with one working consistently and one working sporadically. Mayor Ryan Griffin said the city is working to install a new network of tornado sirens, assuming a grant is received to help pay for those. The city is seeking $200,000 in state disaster funds for the estimated $187,000 cost for the 5 sirens and another $800,000 for the repair of Kencindot St. that partially washed out the major connector street between [State Route 124 & State Route 436.] See SIRENS on page 3..." It continues on page 3 rambling about money and the mass notification system that nobody cares about.
This newspaper article also doesn't mention the Paris Pike siren, which is proven to be the most known siren due to the way it died and its location around residences. It doesn't mention that it is broken. It mentions 2 sirens (though mentioning 3 in the beginning), saying 1 is constantly working and one is sporadically working. They also never mentioned any locations of sirens, despite having a picture of the Paris Pike siren along with the article. The picture's caption says the location. I think McKenzie is trying to avoid the discovery of the Maple Ave. siren for some reason. There's no reason to hide it since its "sporadic". City Hall obviously knows more than the public does. Apparently the Paris Pike siren had been run for so long it was smoking & sparking. It died slowly and painfully. This happend in 2020 and was told by the public on Facebook posts. The CIty Park siren (which City Hall says works consistently) is also sporadic. It hardly works. The Maple Ave. siren is worse. The last time I heard from it was actually pretty recently, but it sounded bad. The City Park siren sounds the same as the few other times I heard it, but it seems to be picky on activation times. One night it went off and then the next night it decided to not go off.
There could be a reason for this, as I noticed that the activation box on the siren becomes unreliable after it ages. I forgot the model, but it was proven to be one of the ones that get picky. According to Sweet Tea Sirens, a siren enthusiast around my local area, this is likely the cause of those 2 sirens having their little sporadic wonders. As for the one on Paris Pike.. it's dead. Maple Ave and City Park sirens are just aging peices of rotted, tan horns on a pole. At this point they just sit there and collect green stuff.
If any of this news is true, McKenzie will be getting new sirens very soon. How exciting!
