Photos of new SONGS system

Mon Aug 27, 2007 12:08 am

Last weekend I went to Dana point for my baby cousin?s birthday. I knew that Dana Point had installed new Whelen WPS2910's so I went and took a siren hunt and found allot of siren (there where so many on PCH that I didn't take all of them)

This siren is on top of a big hill on Avenida Pico. This is the same site where an old Toshiba was. And according to my dad this siren was hooked up to the old diesel generator before they ran power to it. Oh yeah that?s my dad below.

This WPS2910 is located at Presido Ave. What is interesting about this installation is that there is a street light on the same mounting.

Same siren, but a close up photo.

This is a WPS2906. This one is on Pacific Coast Highway; there are about 6 more of these along PCH. Sorry about the sun.

Maybe I can get out there this October and get a video of a test.

Nice pictures CABLEvision. I can recognize site SC-5 on the map (Camino Capistrano/PCH) (http://ci.san-clemente.ca.us/sc/Inf/Map ... sirens.jpg)[Save to your computer for easier viewing] I've passed by it many times on my way to San Diego as well as other two or three other sites visible from the 5 freeway. There's another site a little further north of Dana Pt that I'm also familiar with also visible from the freeway; it is near a "Pacific Sales" store. The only one I've seen not from the freeway is in the Dana Pt Marina itself next to a parking lot off Island Way.

Anyway, looking at the base of the new Whelens and this picture on the siren archive, http://www.jmarcoz.com/sirens/sanclemente_ca.jpg , it appears as if they had re-used the base of the old Toshiba sirens as a support for the speaker array.

Hope you have good luck for the test video. I'd check Edison's website around the end of September or the beginning of October for updates on the test schedule. It's usually around the third week of October.

Hey I like your avatar! I am familiar with that siren at pacific sales. I was going to get a photo of it actually, but my family was waiting for cake. There is also one among some pine trees at what looks like a little old farm house. On the access road. I wonder what they did with the old Toshiba's?

Thanks, I happened to come across it a while back on San Clemente's web page about emergency planning. I decided to put it on last night after seeing your post about the SONGS sirens, it was sized just right for an avatar.

Those Whelen omnis have hardly changed in the past twenty years; they are still using the same cell design which they started with back in the 80s.

Old South Orange County Sirens

Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:19 am

Better yet who got the Old STL-10's the old system had several.

A real siren hunt would be the CD 1000 that used to be on the
eastside of the Freeway near a church and was replaced by a
Toshiba 15 + years ago this CD -1000 was an Icon for deckades
and was very easy to spot going south ,even though the pole was
only about 15 feet high. It did have its own fenced enclosure.
Of course it added the chill out  over
all others since it was duo toned.
