Whelen WPS-2750 Recorded today in Michigan!

Sat Nov 03, 2007 6:18 pm

Lets not get too excited here, it is a WHELEN after all.

However this is the siren I grew up next to and the one attribute that I do likevery much is the "Whoop" tone which Dearborn, MI has used since installing these sirens back around 1990. I might add that the "Snow Siren" that they sound on these Whelens creates a very unique erie sound when all the differant model whelens do Hi-Lo Together in dis-chord. It is used to tell people to get their cars off the street for the snow plows.

Here is the standard Early Warning Siren Test performed at 1300 today, the first Saturday of the month. This is the model WPS-2750. Most of the sirens in Dearborn are 2740s, with a few 2750s, 2805s scattered about, and what have you.

I recorded this about 100ft from the siren with my "cheaper" digital camera, however! In person I noticed a rahspy metallic noise, perhaps, the mounting or screens were vibrating? ... a bad driver cell?...... I will leave that up to the experts, but if you hear something like that in the recording, it was also heard in person.

Please leave some comments lastly, on the youtube video, this siren doesnt get much discussion and I would like to encourage any input anyone has, positive or negative! as i would like to see what you all have to say about it. LOL They really shoudl paly the old Nintendo 8 bit mario music on these things, thats about how melodius their tone is, hehe.

Enjoy, something differant for you all that I have been meaning to catch.

Mike

For your conveniance, the Siren winds up at :55 seconds and the wind-down starts at 3:59! Unless you want to listen to 3 minutes of Whoop!

P.S. The Dogs in Dearborn HATE this siren, in the summer you can hear them all moan in the neighborhood, when the siren winds down.

I heard the whoop from my house today, at around 1:02 or so PM, right?
Thanks for the video!

The raspy noise is probably the high level of sound causing some distortion in your microphone; you can't notice the slight natural resonant frequency of the screens against the sound of the siren.

Well I cant hear it so much in the recording, but what I was refering to I heard with my own ears, I was setting across from the siren and heard the noise minus ear protection.

Nice video...love how it winds down after it has been doing Whoop. Try and get them in Hilo!
