Siren hunting **New Pic's Added 7-10**

Tue Nov 20, 2007 12:33 am

On Friday 16, 2007 and Saturday 17, 2007 I was in downtown Detroit to go to the John K King book store to see what is new since the last visit (civil defense books, and Fire magazines) and I found these sirens......

Please note that the pic's from Sat. are not the best due to the rain

This is the only Detroit Whelen I've seen so far. It may be for the Plant only?
The only 2001 I've found nearest downtown so far.
And it's not hooked up to the power lines yet.

Burbank Elementary school at Rex and State Fair Ave.
The school has a newer name, but that's what's carved in the granite above the doorway.

This one is hard to see from almost every side of the building except for one spot on State Fair.

I also on Saturday went down to Monroe County and Southwestern Wayne County to search around there for sirens.

Just a few 100 feet to the east of this one stands a 2001.

I went to the FD guys in the station and told them about it, and they said that the Federal signal one is the only one that works, the other has been disconnected. If you look in Pic 4 you can see the three tubes that are cut and pinched over.

Nice pictures. are the whelens going to be removed soon? Or are they just going to sit on their pole untouched. Its seems a bit stupid that they leave the control cabinet open.

I plan on getting a telephoto lens for my camera. So then I can try to get a pic of the rotator tag.

Awesome pictures! Those are some good close ups. Are all sirens in Detroit mounted on buildings?

Went on a short trip to Detroit and Redford TWSP.
I started out at Lessenger Middle School, On Trinity St. Just South out Joy Rd., Just West of Evergreen Rd. I missed one street, off of Evergreen, so I went down Constance St. When I got to Trinity St. I saw a Thunderbolt poking out of the School. This the first Detroit T-bolt that the compressor that is in the building that I have found so far.

Then I took Joy Rd West to Beech Daly, then went north and found another Thunderbolt near the south Redford FD.

This is the first time seeing an Hour meter on a siren.

Then I went more north on Beech Daly to Redford Township Municipal Complex. This Thunderbolt is between the FD and another Building.

At this point, my camera was not wanting to be cold, and Light was fading fast. Some pic's are blurry, So I decided to go home, But when I got to 7 Mile, I happened to look left and down 2 blocks was another Thunderbolt. I turned around and snapped a few pic's.

Went on another siren hunt today.
many of the Detroit T-bolt and Thunderbeams have been replaced with 2001's. But I did find a few T-bolts/beams still in place
These are not in the order I found them.

Thunderbeam ontop a school on Ward St. near Joy Rd.
This one is super hard to see except from a block away, even then you only get the top.

Barely visible Thunderbeam on Palmetto St. Near Van Dyke Ave.
Note* the houses across the street are taller and the east side of the building is also taller. So a majority of the sound for this one is blocked.

And lastly, I went back to Vernor Elementary to get some better pic's.
I took these from a different spot and when I was here the first time, I didn't notice the control cabinets mounted to plywood on the back side.

You can see here the older 1950's T-Bolt decal in ghost form.
