APEC Australia 2007 Public Address System

Tue Nov 20, 2007 12:40 am

I managed to grab a photo of one of the various public address installations dotted around Sydney CBD and they were all (that I saw) mounted on traffic lights.
This is one on the corner of Castlereagh and Park streets, just up from the hotel I was staying at and has "Bosch" printed on the horn and super-imposed on the back of the driver enclosure (with some serious cooling fins I might add). They now remain as a permanant public address system for Sydney CBD.

Here's an image of it, uploaded to Wikipedia for everyone's benefit. Before that image, there was nothing that I could find (at least of legible resolution).

They were so serious about security at the convention that it even resulted in an act of Parliament!

It's good when Parliament acts now and then. Makes you feel that they're doing something.

How are these used? Are there speakers outside the CBD?

(Note to Americans: Central Business District = downtown)

Oh yes. NSW Police were granted powers to arrest anyone within a security zone including searches without a warrant and such, and also allowed VIP security to carry their own weaponry, which was considered a big deal here. The Chasers War on Everything pissed off a lot of high-ranking police and parliament officials, and came very close to being shot themselves. Notably the 'highlight' of APEC. :D

As far as I'm aware and from what I've seen they're only littered around central Sydney and are sounded with (I assume) our designated emergency tone (in a tropical cyclone video that was posted here a while back) then the usual voice prompts on what the emergency is and how to panic... I mean what to do. :)

Do you happen to know the specs on the system.I assume they are possibly as loud as an American game of Football (not soccer) loudspeakers just without the bass.http://youtube.com/watch?v=vSY4nAUF2N0

That is the loudspeaker sounding over all of the people cheering.

No, all I know is that they were manufactured by Bosch.

:: Edit ::
This system appears to be a custom built system as I can only find information on the speakers themselves and not of the controller, so it's not a "package" like Fed. Sig. and ASC offer.

I'll dig up the NSW Parliament hansard and see what I can find on the manufacturers.

Bingo! Roads and Traffic Authority.
