nice map, but how unusual, their research is wrong, they are assuming all the sirens are P-50's , i know this to be completely false. Well i guess everyone cant be siren fans like us and know the difference.

Joe, why isn't your Model 2T on the map? :)

My favorite part of the article:
Schliesman and other emergency management officials said they consider tornado sirens to be crude relics of the Cold War that cannot be heard indoors.

"They are archaic," Schliesman said.

Yet in a news release sent Thursday, Schliesman says no one died during this month's storm because "citizens sought the shelter of their basements when they heard the sirens go off."
Sirens only get bashed like that because they're expensive. They're still the best and most efficient warning mechanism for populated areas. Sad to hear such stupid. contradictive nonsense come from EM officials charged with protecting the lives of citizens.

well i was talking more about the racine county coverage, non of racine counties sirens are P-50's. However a majority of Milwaukee counties sires i believe are P-50's. The radius' for the sirens seem like they would be flawed.

I hate when counties refer to sirens as "relics" or "old technology"! We use "old"technology" everyday! Light bulbs, cars, elevators are old technology but yet you don't see people pointing that out and wanting use something else! And it is true towns and counties with sirens have lower death rates in tornadoes than towns without sirens. And further more Weather Radios are so over rated! Last month we had a tornado watch and warning and the National Weather Service Radio transmitter was on the fritz so we never got the notifications on the radio. Plus i don't cart my weather radio into the grocery store or to the gym, so to be weather radios or only effective if they #1) work like they are supposed to and, #2) only if you have one around you all the time.

They're only pushing weather radios because the public pays for them directly. Sirens would mean using taxdollars, otherwise known as the public's money now controlled by often incompetent officials. If the taxpayers want sirens, they should receive them. It would probably cost less per person to install the sirens than it would for every one of those people to have buy a weather radio. And reverse 911 is not without it's flaws. The only advantage it really presents is that it is less expensive, meaning better in the eyes of the officials responsible for our safety.

Right! But when it comes to them buying the best police cars and firetrucks, they dont care about spending bucket loads of money on that! The reverse 911 is probably the worst out of all the warning methods b/c it requires you to be at home, with a phone, and if that phone is a cordless phone and the power is out then it is useless, and the average time for the system to get all the calls out is 10-15 minutes!! I wish people would wake up and see that sirens are the smartest choice for mass warning at the quickest speed. If you ask people the next time your in a tornado warning, how did they know there was a tornado warning, i can assure you most are going to say the sirens( if they have them).
