60's Museum Needs Siren Sound

Thu Jan 24, 2008 10:05 pm

I am with the Sixties Museum and we are opening a museum dedicated to the decade including Cold War and Civil Defense topics. We need a sound file of a Sterling M-5 for our promotional materials. Anyone know of one we can use for free or we are a 501(c)3 tax deductible museum. Also we are looking for 60's era sirens for display or as donations. We own an M5 and are looking for any siren related items.

Here is a very old, but decent recording of a low tone Sterling M10 (dual head) siren. Do realize, that the M5 was intended as a fire siren, and lacks the characteristic "air raid" sound. I'm not sure if your version is single or dual headed, or high or low pitched (low pitch has 8 ports, high has 16 ports for the rotor/stator). However, I'm sure most of the people coming to your museum will not know the different sounds different sirens make. It's up to you whether you want to be more historically accurate (of which only one person out of 50,000 would know the difference), or make a more dramatic presentation, and use the sound clip of a true Civil Defense siren such as a Thunderbolt. Anyways, here is the recording. I'm not positive, but I believe Steelman Hiles made this recording around 1999/2000. He does not mind if this recording is used.

It is a dual head, I will have to check on the ports. It came from a fire station originally. We ultimately want historical accuracy, but the initial press is not necessarily tied to that siren. We hope to build a complete collection of the sirens used for CD. Thanks for all the responses so far. I need to find someone to hook me up with a control for the Sterling also if anyone has suggestions.
