UK & USA Siren Frequency differences

Mon Apr 14, 2008 12:38 pm

Hi all,

I am aware that UK's frequency is 50Hz, and USA is 60Hz. So I always wondered, what would a USA Siren sound like over here? Also, what would a UK Siren sound like in USA?
I made an attempt, it is a rough guess so it's probably miles off the real thing...
But here goes:

Actually that may be pretty close to the real thing The 2t22 in that clip sounds exactly like the one that used to be at McConnell AFB.

Take a listen

Given that the siren is in working order, the pitch of any siren will be a major third lower on 50 Hz. compared with 60 Hz. For example, a 12 port Model 5 will sound an "F" note in the United States and a "C#" note in the UK. Your video is dead on.

The 2t22 sounds more like a carters but nice to hear what it sounds like at 50Hz. I wonder what a 3t22 sounds doing hi/lo at 50 Hz.

Placed side by side, both sirens would sound the same pitches if they were running on the same frequency. Klaxon made horizontal sirens with 3T22-type dampers. This is Dan Wisbey's video of a Klaxon CS8 from a couple of years ago. Note the stuck damper.
