The Baxter, MN Hurricane...

Sat May 31, 2008 4:07 pm

Is gone. I drove thru there yesterday and see two relatively new Federal 2001-135s spaced about a mile apart in the area where the Hurricane was supposed to be. It might be worthwhile for any of you MN guys to contact the public works department in Baxter to see if the old Hurricane is still lying around in a scrapyard somewhere. Can't hurt, anyway.

Wish I had better news.

NOT ANOTHER ONE! :x

What's a 2001-135?! Aren't they 130s?! I'll try to contact Baxter's staff, even though, I'm NOWHERE near the area.

Pics

The trip to Northern MN was not without a couple interesting finds. Just for the record, I've included the pics of one of the 2001-130s in Baxter. I also found a couple of other interesting ones: A siren on the water tower in Hewitt, MN that looked interesting/cool, and a single-headed siren on the city hall of Vining, MN. Hope ya like 'em.

Yay, a Decot! :D See, that's a good siren? Not a complete waste of a trip, then. ;) Nice single headed siren, too. Sterling?

That bites. I was going to go up there in July for the Siren test. It would have been nice too, I havn't heard a hurricane in about 15 years.

The water tower siren is a Decot Red Arrow. They have a housing very similar to an Erick except that the Decot has two louvres over the screen while the Erick has none. It is not visible in the photo, but a Decot rotor is a standard 12-port rotor much like a Sterling one in shape, while an Erick rotor has a reinforcing ridge in the center where the motor shaft is attached, rather than at the base. Judging by the flare of the intake "cone" on the last siren, my guess is a single-headed Darley siren.

Exact Location

Volo, I'm assuming I found the same location as you remembered: west of Hwy 371 and North of the road. The 2001-130 I found was located here:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/inglewood+ ... baxter+mn/

The NE corner of Hwy 210 and Inglewood Drive (sorry, I don't know how to do the maps with little pin-like things in 'em). There was also another 2001 variant about a mile to the west, near a elementary school near the shore of White Sand Lake.

Seeing that these are relatively new Federal models and recent installations, I'm *guessing* that the Hurricane is gone...I could be wrong, though. I really wonder if the Baxter public works might still have that old Hurricane lying in their scrap yard. Didn't you say you thought it was the square-horned version too?

BTW, ASC won't help you here, as, the Hurricane 130 sirens have been discontinued for quite a while now.........
