THREE MILE ISLAND SIREN RECORDINGS A SUCCESS!

Thu Jun 26, 2008 8:27 pm

That's right! You saw it here first!

I successfully got two TMI siren recordings. The first is a video of a P-10 in action. You hear a Cyclone and another P-10 coming in before this kicks on. It starts up when I start talking about the radio controls and the antenna. I say something like, "the antenna is maybe...". Listen to the noise coming off that thing!

Before anyone complains about the jittering and shaking, allow me to say that I didn't have a tripod because I had to basically jump through every hoop to borrow a digital camera that could record videos with sound. Also consider that I was standing across the street from this thing, and being this close and standing there was like being in the front seat of a roller coaster. At some point I said, but I don't know if you can hear in the video, "the sidewalk is actually vibrating!"

And here's an audio recording I took by leaving a digital voice recorder on my roof before I left for the P-10 video. This is my town's Cyclone. Listen to how when it kicks on, it makes a nasty echo. After it winds down, you're complimented with the harmonic sounds of another P-10 and a Cyclone across the river going at it for another minute or two.

Wow! That Cyclone has a really high pitch! How much juice is it getting?

I didn't realize just how loud P-10's are. What's the DB rating on one of those?

They're 3-phase motors, I think the voltage options are 208, 277, and 460 volts. Not very efficient motors, and not suitable for battery backup.

They should be about 126dB at 100', since they're basically an Allertor 125 with a different fiberglass casing.

That's about the same dB rating as a Cyclone, yet a Cyclone has a 50-hp motor while a P-10 has a 10-hp motor.

EDIT: If you listen closely to the audio recording of the Cyclone, after it shuts down and you can hear the P-10, you can faintly hear bits and pieces of a Federal 2001. The Penetrator in this recording is down the street, less than a mile away, on Limekiln Road. The other Cyclone that is sounding with the P-10 has to be across the river, a few miles away, because there are no other Cyclones near me at all except the main feature of this recording. Further down Limekiln Road a few miles is a new 2001-SRNB. You can only hear it in a few spots, but it's in there.

I was going to say that the P-10 in that video did sound like it was as loud as a Thunderbolt. The Allertor 125 runs at a slightly lower RPM than the P-10, so that may also contribute to the P-10 being a little louder. Anyone know how loud the single tone version of the P-10 is?

Isn't a single-toned P-10 a P-15?

I used to think the same thing, but supposedly both models were produced in single and dual tone. The difference lies in the horsepower rating for the motor (P-10 being 10Hp, P-15 being 15 Hp.), dual and single tone choppers are the same size, so they should be interchangable. I've never heard a single tone P-10 before, and have only heard one dual tone Penetrator rumored to be a P-15.

I think that there's at least one video on YouTube of a single tone P-10, and I think it was taken somewhere in WI. My ears tell me that the single tone P-10 has 8 ports, while the duel tone version has 9/12 ports. I think that the same goes for the P-15.
