Failed ACA Screamer recording attempt (But you can hear it)

Sun Jul 13, 2008 1:51 am

Today, I tried to record the dual-tone ACA Screamer siren in Atkins. Due to recent flooding in our area, the main road I normally take was closed, so I had to take a long detour on some back gravel roads. The detour delayed me immensely, and I was beginning to worry I wouldn't make it. I was doing my absolute best to get to Atkins before noon, even if it meant bending traffic laws (A word of advice: driving 65MPH down a rough gravel road is not a good idea).

I knew I was cutting it close, very close. I knew once I got there, I needed every spare second possible to park and set the camera up on the dashboard. So, while still driving, I attached the tripod to the camera and started it recording, so I wouldn't have to do that after stopping. I finally pull into Atkins, round the corner, I'm just two blocks away from the siren, almost there...

...then the siren winds up...I missed it by only 30 seconds!

BUT...since I had started recording while still driving, my camera did manage to record the siren winding up. When I finally did pull up to the siren (After it started winding down), I pulled the camera out and recorded it for a short while...until another car came up behind me and I had to start moving again.

I'm not going to upload this to YouTube, but I decided to post it here anyway. So, enjoy the sound of me driving recklessly while an ACA Screamer blares in the background, accompanied by the sight of my van's passenger seat and sound-blocking earmuffs.

Weather and work schedule pending, I hope to attempt recording this siren again next Saturday...and this time I'm gonna leave half an hour earlier!

I don't believe I have ever heard a Dual Toned Screamer...pretty good video! Sucks that you missed it by a few seconds.

That Screamer sounds a whole lot like a Banshee.

You didn't have as bad of luck as I did last week with the Modulator. At least you got close to the siren, and you were able to catch some of the wind-down up close.

That Screamer sounds like it has a 9/12 port rotor! Just like the SD-10. My dad LOVES SD-10s. (Sorry, it's a little off topic.) Nice recording! Scared the hell out of me when the siren wound up!
There is a thunderbolt siren in my head, it is always going off...

All things considered, I'd say the video turned out pretty well. Certainly not bad. This is especially neat for me to see, because the Screamer S10 has the same guts as my ACA Howler (see avatar). The Howler is basically a rotational Screamer. 10 hp motor powering an 18" 9/12 port chopper. Thanks for your efforts to capture it on film. :)

Aren't Howlers really rare? I've only seen one video of one on YouTube, and that one wasn't running anywhere near full power. That's cool that you have one!

The video you refer to would actually be the one of me winding up the Howler with my drill. Since the siren runs on three phase, it's the best I can do. And yeah, they are pretty rare. I bought the Howler from Archon, who got it from somewhere in Minnesota. The only other ones I've ever seen or heard of are in TX. I think texaschad25 had one, too.

That's a really cool windup! It reminds me of the P10 2 blocks from my house when it winds up. Music to my ears. Good video!
