Yes, they used Sterling motors, which weren't built for waterproof applications. I don't think Sterling even exists anymore. If you look at the SoundMaster 125 in Richard Buggs' picture gallery, you can see that those things aren't water-tight at all. big gaps in the fiberglass housing, where water could get in.

I'm not an expert, but I'm assuming that if you were to put drip-points all the way around the fiberglass "rings," you could probably eliminate a lot of problems.

I'm sure there isn't much to it to make those rigs water-tight, especially with all of the mainstream technologies we have today.

I'm sure I can find someone to do the castings. In the nation's 3rd largest city, you can get pretty much anything you could want. :)

Ah, okay.

If the "Sterling" you're refering to as in Sterling Sirens, they still exist. As SENTRY SIREN, now. Maybe they can build amotor for you, I dunno...
Any one got a picture of a 3 tone SoundMaster? My friend claims he has seen one and it had a 3rd horn jutting out of the top. Unbelievable, as I thought, the 3 tone rotational SoundMaster had a slightly longer top horn. :-?

And for your information, a single SoundMaster chopper weighs about 40 lbs. Thanks to Richard for that bit of information. ALSO, if you wanted any SoundMaster parts, you can try and contact DELAVAN, WI police department. The head police chief apparantly bought some SoundMaster parts from when the Janesville rigs were taken down and preserved. Maybe try asking him for parts. Again, thanks to Richard for that fact.

Nope, it's not the siren company. It was a Japanese motor company, which I think had some relations to Lionel.

I'm very fortunate, as the Rockford-Janesville is only about 45 minutes northwest of me. Hopefully I can get ahold of one of them so i can reproduce them. Are you aware of any legal complications that could prevent me from reproducing them?

If Clinton doesn't work out, do you know of any way to contact Iron Ridge? I looked it up on the map and its a very small town. No website or contact information that I can find.
Taycheedah, WI has a SoundMaster that might or might not be in use. Jerry's never heard it on test day, so, I dunno. Iron Ridge's is still in use. It looks like a 3 tone version to me.

Iron Ridge is a Dual tone 8/12 someone I know saw the insides of it when it was worked on

Clinton's are 2 tone. I don't know if they're in use, but, I must warn you. They're HUGE. They're like 6-7' tall. So, you better have some room for one before you get one. :) HERE is Clinton WI's phone number, etc. Village Hall
301 Cross Street / PO Box 129
Clinton, WI 53525
Phone: (608) 676-5304
Fax: (608) 676-5984

Also, the SUPERBANSHEES were only produced before SoundMaster started making their own version of them. Then, ACA's SuperBanshee must have dropped out in terms of popularity, I guess. The SuperBanshee is 8/12 port. The SoundMaster is 8/12, too, I think. The 3 tone SoundMaster must be 8/10/12 ports. Anyone got a picture of a rotating 3 tone SoundMaster? I know what the OMNI one looks like.

Dan Murphy has a picture of a rotating Soundmaster 125, but I'm not sure if he'll post it or not. I used to have it on my Wisconsin Sirens website with all the other sound master stuff Richard sent me but I seem to have lost all Soundmaster information, except of course, all my pictures, which I'll post when I get back home.
Waste away into nothingness!

Ah, okay. I hope he does decide to post it....

I'd love to see your pictures, Ben. By the way, the Rock County sirens are SoundMaster 115s. :) They were taken down, but, some guy at Delavan WI PD bought the parts. He got them from the place take initionally took them down. I'd love to get a part from that place....

Good Old Soundmaster

Fri Jul 25, 2008 2:11 pm

Guys....the Soundmaster 115DB has the same Rotor /Stator for two or three tones...the third tone was developed by a DAMPER placed in an extension of the air intake on both bottom and top to cause a Hi/Lo type effect...if you look close you will see a pregnant addition on the side of the upper and lower air intakes and a small (3/4") conduit between them....they didn't work very well as they were spring loaded lever action and the solenoids that moved the levers were too light for the force needed and often blew out......I have a couple laying around someplace...

If one needs exact [email protected] is in the process of re-creating most of a 115DB model two tone for his City with parts from Old Rock County, WI Sirens....I am not sure how he will take being dumped upon with questions...but one can only try......He was short the retaining rings for the shafts on the 20HP Sterling Motor he has and is short some fiberglass...but otherwise has a complete rig....

Sterling still shows Electric Motors for BIG $$$ and the 15HP 3 phase 220V seems to be the biggest they have available....they offer custom shaft lengths and SEALED versions....Check their web site...

The Clinton Sirens were owned by Rock County EMG and paid for way back when with Federal $$$...so the County would be the proper place to inquire about purchase...but the Village would know the status of possible replacement....

Delavan PD Chief ONLY CAN SUPPLY THE NAME OF THE OUTFIT WHO REMOVED SOUNDMASTER FROM ROCK COUNTY/JANESVILLE (Ben has those pictures and more in his archive)...He has no parts....

Note...there was a recent group of pictures of a 125DB soundmaster posted.....it had been painted silver and was mounted on a watertower....just search Soundmaster on this site for a lot of pix and info....will save much time....

Gil....I'd advise you look for financing as those motors are very costly in todays market....$10K or more.......also to prevent the freezeup....I had the ROTORS machines down 5 or 10/1000ths to provide space between rotor & stator for expansion (The original specs were TOO TIGHT) and help with drainage/freezing in cold temps.....

LOL guys

Hi Richard,

Thank you so much for all of the information you've provided! You have no idea how grateful I am! I just fired off an email to the Rock County EMA, so I'm anxiously awaiting a reply.

Gil :)

So here's what I got from the Rock County EMA

Oh well. :(

Hmmm, CRUD. I'll have to try and contact the Delavan WI PD guy to se what that outfit was that took the siren down. Or, better yet, just stick around Taycheedah, WI and see if their SoundMaster is ever taken down and try and get a part off of it. If not the whole rig.
