Soundmaster and weird WI siren pics

Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:17 pm

I found my soundmaster stuff tucked away on my hard drive as well as a handful of weird mounting choices throughout wisconsin. EVERYTHING wasn't included, but most of it was.

Enjoy:

This is awesome! Thanks so much for posting....

What's up with the BrownTown, WI siren? It looks like only half of a SoundMaster. Did someone chop off the other half? Nice to see what Janesville's original sirens looked like. I didn't know they used a different disc combination as opposed to Taycheedah, WI's SoundMaster. :-?

Thanks, Ben.

I noticed that some SoundMasters are lacking one of the discs on the bottom chopper assembly. Was that standard, or was it removed because of the icing issues?

Soundmasters (Janesville and others)

Thu Jul 31, 2008 12:12 am

As these sirens were taken down and re-built over the years some of the fiberglass was destroyed by wind and handling...many top covers were blown away and lost....The Rock County OEM refused after a while to pay for making up replacements......there were never many interleaved fiberglass forms made as they were more costly....however they are needed to focus the sound down....

Some versions were fabricated by Mr. Mortgans crews to focus sound to match a special requirement at a site...ergo there are various versions of the fiberglass interleaves....but all 115DB sirens are basically identical as to major components

According to Buggsr:
The only difference is in the Fiberglass....some were interleaved differently as the supervisor in Madison wanted to try and distribute sound in a different pattern for some sirens that were used for Fire and Storm warning......

In the end it didn't make too much difference in the sound distribution at any given distance except directly under the siren....
They all pretty much have different looking arrangments for discs. I like Iron Ridge's best.

EDIT!: Oh, never mind. I see Buggsr posted already. I'm still looking for one's chopper after, like, 2 months already.

Soundmaster Rotor Stator

Thu Jul 31, 2008 12:29 am

Guys....It might be that RON WATSON at the HENRY, CO, TN emergency management office has a complete rotor and stator he would sell...(I gave it to them...see pix on trailer on Ben's post).....

It is the 12 port I think...Larry at Cottage Grove, TN had two assembles the same until I went out and looked over what he was trying to re-build...he took one back and traded it out.....You realize ther are two different rotor/stator combination for dual tone the 155/125DB produced..

Review some of these posts for info..you will have to piece it together....

Ben...Glad to have you back.....thanks for the posts....stay in touch

Hmm. Didn't think about that before.

Would contacting Janesville, WI's EMA staff tell me who/what took down the original SoundMasters?

By the way, did SoundMaster ever make a 1 tier Single Tone version of the SoundMaster, or, is that a custom job by someone else?

Single Rotor Soundmaster

Thu Jul 31, 2008 1:14 am

Yes...there was a Soundmaster Single rotor/stator version.....It had a "witches Hat" cone atop it......Seems I may have seen one on this site and didn't think about it until now.....

It used the same motor and the cone top hat covered the unused shaft...
mounted similar to the big brother .... Not too many made tho....

I don't think the current Rock County Director is the one who presided over the changeout of the originals....It may be they will look up the records...If my memory serves correctly they were from the Appleton or Greenbay area....should be quite promenent in siren install and repairs...

Ah, okay. I thought there was. Ben has got a picture of one in BROWNTOWN, WI. Dunno if it's there anymore. I will try and contact Rock County EMA staff on the old sirens, anyways. I hope they have the records still up somewhere. If not, I'll look up places that test/install sirens in Green Bay and Appleton areas. I'd love to get my hands on a SoundMaster chopper and build it into a single tone version.... Since I don't think many exist anymore. Thanks tons for the information........

Best luck. Nice seeing you again. :)
