An old soldier in Dallas

Here are some pics I took today of one of the original (1959) Dallas
Thunderbolts. I flipped up the blower box to make sure it was a single
phase unit and it is. I was surprised to see a smaller blower. I guess since
the repulsion induction motor runs faster that's why the blower is smaller.
The blower appears to be exactly half the size of a 3 phase unit.
The motor looks a bit smaller than the old 3 phase motor also.

Very old Thunderbolt, do you know if it's still active? Atleast it's still in one piece over the years though. Anyways, very nice photos.

At most, it seems as though it's survived with most of it's original parts. Great pics. Didn't know there was a such thing as a 1 phase T-Bolt!

Nice repulsion induction motor on the blower, is that a model where the brushes retract after the motor has hit full speed?

Very nice pics. What's with the fence and barbed wire? Most sirens I see around here don't have a fence around them.

Maybe to prevent Vandalizm, or Unauthorized acccess? IDK for sure. We dont have fencing around our sirens in Lansing...

It's at an old vacant fire station where the power has been disconnected.
I would bet that it still works though.

I think they might be fairly rare. One of mine is a single phase, and it was the first one I'd heard of. Definitely inefficient, but I guess it made sense in some applications where getting 3-phase power would be tough.




I'll have to go gave a look at that Thunderbolt Where is that fire station? So of the remaining Dallas Thunderbolts, there's this one, and the one at Hillcrest High School. I wonder what (if any) others are still there? I'm not sure if the Hillcrest one is still connected, as I've never managed to be there on a test day. I might try to catch the December test, if there is one. We usually are there for a week or 2 during Christmas time.

Lots of the Dallas Tbolts are still around. Installation of the 2001's is going very slowly.
