the round horned model didn't come around until either the late 70s or early 80s. Both the Hurricane and the Thunderbolt came out in the very early 50s. I would imagine that if one company had copied off the other with the design of a supercharged blower enhanced siren they would have been sued much earlier.

I thought the round horned model came out in the mid to late 60s...

Or, maybe it was the fact that ACA used Fiberglass instead of steel to make sirens. A round, flowing shape is much easier to mold and cast in fiberglass, and the same goes for a boxy shape in steel. So, what if Federal did sue ACA, then, in an effort to settle the lawsuit, ACA designed an even more efficient horn that didn't follow a square shape? What do you think

Nelso, I believe that in the interest of time and money, ACA switched the design of the siren for maximum efficiency. I don't think it is a lawsuit issue, just the fact that time is money.

Does anybody know of any cities that still/have hurricane sirens. I read the manual from wisconsinsirens.com about the hurricane and it said that they are capable of doing 2 special dual tones (must order specialized) and 3 single tones and are even capable of doing HI-LOW. http://wisconsinsirens.com/manuals/Hurricane.zip So there may be a other (Mark I) Hurricanes out there doing HI-LOW. . Or Single-Tone (Mark II) Hurricanes. Or a combination of things.

Here it is! I had it saved.

Wow! It appears they REMOVED a vertical member of the tower
to the left of the sirenn so that it's projector could ratate 360.

BIG mistake!
They should be notified and put it back!

I know Darien, IL has 2 ACA Hurricanes, i believe there is
one alogn I-55 in Illinois somewhere. there used to be some in greenville
Texas.

As far as I can see, nothing was removed from the tower. The angle of the photo makes it look that way at first though. The member that appears to be missing is to the right of the siren.

Oh, thanks. You're right.

I was expecting to see the same vertical supports as on the left side
of the tower. But looking through the tower on the opposite side, those vertical struts are not present.
Thank you. And so glad someone would NOT have removed anything.

Looks as though the projector would hit that cable chase!
Do the projectors always rotate, or can they aim them at an area,
for example, towards town?

as with all sirens, they always rotate. unless they disconnect the
rotator motor or something...


even if they requested, i doubt the telecom copany would remove
anything from the tower. After all, the town was lucky enough for
the telecom company to OK them installign it there.
