Hoopeston, IL Sirens

On the way back to Lafayette from a failed video recording of an Allertor in Paxton, IL, my friend (kidnapped for the journey) and I decided to stop at a McDonalds in Hoopeston, IL. While we ate our 8 McDoubles, we drove around the town looking for sirens. We didn't have much time, so we only spotted 3 sirens, all of which were in eyeshot of each other. This leads me to believe that they have quite a few more.

Probably the best school mascot in America. (Though I was a fighting Farmer, and Golden, CO, are the Bullwhackers)

Ah, so you found the Paxton Allertor! I've seen that one from I-57. There is also a very small Screamer right next to an I-57 on ramp, very easy to miss. Must be the 2 HP.

I'm surprised Hoopeston has such old sirens, I thought they were a pretty new town/village/whatever.

Paxton, IL has 2 Allertors, 1 Screemer, a Model 2 and a Model 5. I have pictures of a couple of them. I will post them later tonight.

That Model 5 is a GCS. Man, I thought the Astoria Fighting Fishermen, the Tillamook Cheesemakers, and the Tonopah (Nevada) Muckers were embarrassing! I was first a Bear, then a Grizzly, but my dad's high school in Delphi, Indiana, called their team (what else?) the Oracles. I don't know if they were a good team, but I bet they always knew the outcome.

Whats a GCS & what does it stand for?

General City Services made sirens in Minneapolis with Federal innards. They have that distinctive top like a pith helmet and a lower louvre larger than the top, while Darleys of the period usually had domed tops.

The Allertor was actually visible from the Screamer. I was actually pretty bummed that nothing sounded. I always figured the Illinois standard test time was first Tuesday of the month between 10:00 and 10:30. Guess that doesn't apply everywhere.
