Is the SD-10 in the first picture missing it steel band around the middle?

Yes, it is. This is a first generation SD-10. They didn't have the steel band around the rotor/stator like the latter models did. The protective band was added shortly thereafter, to reduce the effects of snow and ice buildup. There is nothing worse than a frozen siren, when you need it in an emergency.

This is a good question. I believe the first generation SD-10s were rated a few dB higher, than the later production models. The steel band would also serve to deflect the sound pattern downwards and upwards, from the rotor/stator.

I remember a earlier thread discussing the sd10 sheetmetal band.It was added to supposetly increase sound output by forcing it up/down against the sheetmetal cones giving a slight db increase.I really don't see it working good though.I also read on another site that Tuscon Az. was once surrounded by Nike missle or icbm bases so that plays in with the whole cold war airraid CD thing which those sirens were once part of.....

I remember seeing a thunderbolt when i lived there. but that was years ago. all i remember was the blower cover was gone and the horn was rusted very bad.

He said that there were a bunch of 1000's and some SD-10's..and they were on the same poles as those in the pictures.

Yeah. He has a video of the pile of sirens when he went out to get the Thunderbolt head. I tried to check YT for his username because I exchanged messages with him on there. They are doing site maint. now and my messages wouldn't come up.

I wonder why it's painted grey instead of cd yellow?the city of San Jose did that to all of their remaining sirens.Either gray green or black.sd10's model 5's etc.

It was yellow. You can still see the spots of yellow on the siren
