Fri Jun 05, 2009 1:17 am

I just found a clip on a siren test with a whole system of kockumsonics tyfon sirens.
Test tones are special alert and all clear. Filmed in G?teborg sweden and no it is not me who had filmed it.

Indeed, thank you very much for posting this! Swedish sirens sound really cool, as do a lot of other foreign siren models.

Those are Kockums Sonics air horns with attached compressors. They are popular in Sweden and Norway, as well as parts of Switzerland. A few places in Oregon use similar air horns (Federal Signal, Cunningham Air Whistle, etc.) for fire calls, such as Heppner, Empire (Coos Bay), and Santa Clara (Eugene). They were also popular in northern California towns like McCloud, Mount Shasta, Dunsmuir, Redding, and Alturas, but are fast disappearing.

Nice to know that other countries put a high priority on outdoor warning systems and do not consider such systems "outdated" for the 21st century, unlike a lot of places in the USA.

Wish the UK would get sirens. And some form of system like the EAS.

That's surprising that the UK hasn't maintained a siren network, considering all of their neighbors do.

They pulled them all down in 1992/93. Their reason was cost. Screw that, the MPs have been claiming more than that would need in false expenses!

And yeah, all of our surrounding countries do and certain parts of the country (Birmingham) seem to attract tornadoes.

Bear in mind most of the country is under sea level too :S
