Build your own supercharged Siren

Fri Jul 10, 2009 4:53 pm

Hi.

After a long time of absence I'm back and I'm somewhat proud to
present my new project: My own supercharged Siren.
Since I started a apprenticeship, I have the opportunity to use lots of
different tools and machines for metalworking. Thus I could not stand to
tell my boss about my plans of building a siren and surprisingly he
sparked interest in sirens. Finally we made a deal:
I had to obtain a siren for him and therefor I'm allowed use all
the things I need.

Ok, everything starded with disassembling a cheap "ebay's got lots of 'em"-siren and taking measurements.

Then I used the lathe to build a new stator out of brass, that fits on
a pipe I found in the scrap metal box:

Yes, this single port stator appears to be a bit Thunderblotish. And a Thunderboltish
siren needs a horn, so I built one out of steel from the scrap:

And here are the parts of the horn support:

Since I want to install my siren on my balcony, it needs a tripod:

Next week, I'm going to attach the pipe to the tripod and if things work
out I'll install the siren next weekend.

Regards,
Niklas

So where's the 'blower' or supercharger as some call it?

Very nice work, but unless you make/get a blower for it, it will be quieter than to start with.

I'll use a blower from some earlier projects. It's basically a radial blower with
three stage producing a pressure of ~35 psi. The adapter for the blower and
the control unit are the last thing i've planned to to build.

Damn!
35PSI oughtta get it singing! I always thought you needed an exponential horn profile for a supercharged siren, but considering how loud a 2001 is without an exponential profile, you'll be fine! Those are some mighty nice welds on that horn too!

35PSI?

Damn, that's gonna bring the pitch down of that little siren a lot. I know that thing screams but it shouldn't sound too far off of a 1000 now!

How many cfm or litres/hr does the radial blower put out?

Anyway, that thing is gonna be loud, with a blower like that on it.

Mike! the new 2001s have an exponential horn, hehe.

Actually, the inner portion of the inside of a 2001 forms an exponential horn (similar principal on the Modulator).

Interesting project, Niklas.

as Jason says, the 2001 does have an exponential horn. Here's a section view from the 2001-130 manual:

35psi is one thing. What you need to make a siren loud is a large VOLUME of air. It can be 35psi but if it's not a lot of air I don't think it will be that loud at all.

It appears that Imageshack has been hacked by some sort of group that wants to show how vulnerable websites servers are?
