new whelen spotted in Houston

Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:47 pm

I noticed that a whelen has been installed at a nearby fire station. It's on Gessner & Kempwood in N/W Houston, Tx. I went over to ask about it, but the only person there was some young guy organizing some equipment & he didn't know much about it, but said it was recently installed. I haven't heard any tests from it yet.

Very interesting mounting; you don't see a tower mounted Whelen that often. I assume that this type of mounting is done to provide better coverage?

it does seem alittle low since most of the tree's around here are taller than that. At one time there was a Thunderbolt about a block away from this one & it was at least 20 ft higher.

Looks like a 3016 to me, or is it a Vortex or 4000?

3016. Too tall to be a 4004/Vortex.
STATUS: Taking a break from ARS until late July.

Wait, JPayne9207 said it was new. I thought they didn't make 3016's anymore?
Kicking it in the siren party since '08

It could be a used one. I know some places have replaced their 3016s.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

I didn't mean it's a "new" siren, I meant it's a new siren for the area. Knowing Houston, they would buy something used. I haven't been close enough to it yet to get an accurate visual on it's condition. Although from the distance I was from it, it looks to be in excellent condition.
