Silent Burglar Alarms? Englewood has Silent Tornado Sirens!

Wed Oct 11, 2006 10:19 pm

LasTuesday, 10-3, the FD training chief said thathe City of Englewood, Colorado tests their sirens on the 1st Wednesday of the month.

I was pleased because I could record Denver's sirens the 2nd Wednesday, but also surprised Englewood's was nothe 2nd Wednesday.
The chief said he would check.
He kindly called back and reaffirmed that it was the first Wednesday.

We drove to Englewood and staged near their ugly yellow vacuum cleaner-looking siren. (Englewood has two Allertors.)

To capture the start-up, at 10:59 I placed the camcorder into Record.

Nothing.

At 11:05 I called dispatch. "We test on the 2nd Wednesday".

Today we returned.
At 10:59 I started videotaping.
Denver'sirens could be heard, (I detected a dual-tone Thunderbolt) and then they finished.
No Allertor action.

At 11:05 I calledispatch.
They seemed surprised thathey were supposed to testheir sirens.
After 3 minutes on hold they said they will test "in a few minutes."

At 11:18 I called back.
They were too busy to test, but said wait 3 to 5.

At 11:34 I called.
They said they had pressed the button but nothing happened.

OK, it looks like a strangexotic fish.

I should sneak up and paint eyes, mouth and gills on it.

After all, they aren't using it for anything else.

When I first saw a Allertor in Monimeen falls A big 25 hp one too. I thought it was a industral vaccumm for the DPW garage. Later I figured out what it was. Dam thing was scary looking, never went off when I was there. Found out latter it was a Single tone Single phase 25hp 8 port Allertor siren
