Wow, a lot of that article sounds very familiar. Federal still has a monopoly on the siren market though, even though they make an underperforming product.

TESTING ????

Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:23 pm

We had a great time this weekend when a bunch of you came to my shop. Please spread the word about the testing standards (or lack thereof) of the Federal 2001-130.

It appears David has defeated Goliath!! This may open the way for other systems, such as my Dynawhistle, to finally be given a fair trial.

Its pretty obvious something VERY wrong is going on when you have:

1. A qualified local contractor who has been working with the county for years on siren maintenance and installations.

2. The same contractor sells a product that is obviously superior to what federal or any other manufacturer offers.

3. The ratings clearly state that the product is superior, and real world experience can validate that.

4. Said contractor has the LOW bid and the county still hasn't awarded the contract to him.

I don't know what Hamilton county is thinking, but we all know who the contract should be awarded to, especially considering the previously mentioned facts. Its very saddening to see a county's corruption and greed come into play on a matter as important as this.

What does anyone think of getting media attention on this matter. Siren replacement has been a hot topic in Hamilton county since the 99 F4 destroyed Blue Ash and Montgomery. Just a thought. The media around here really feeds on things like this especially when there is taxpayers involved, a lower bid is being rejected, and the stadiums /sales tax situation. Not to mention the so called healing economy. Need some input on this.

I think it would be a great idea. Its the only way that you will find out what the reasoning is behind this madness. I'm sure that bringing public attention to this matter will have the same effect as swatting a hornets nest with a baseball bat.

I wonder what the ema's response would be?

That would be a great idea, especially this time of year (increased focus on severe weather awareness and coming up on the 11th anniversary of that tornado). Anything we can do to make the general public aware of what's happening would help put pressure on the county to do something.

On a related note, we also need to put pressure on Cincinnati to stop removing sirens without putting up replacements (the College Hill tbolt is now in Clayton's shop, which leaves a large area with no siren - I'm sure the folks who live on Marlow will take note considering that siren's been there for 40+ years).

I believe this needs media attention. People need protection. They certainly don't need their taxpayer money wasted on an inferior system when there are better systems out there. They've had the wool pulled over their eyes long enough.

Also last year, they removed sirens from Hartwell, North Avondale, and Fairmount without putting up replacements. I don't know which area I'd call this, but it's north of downtown, and over the summer, they took down the SD-10 on McMicken Ave. A few years ago, they took down the Tbolt that was on top of the YMCA at Columbia & Delta, and it was never replaced, and they never replaced or found the Tbolt that got stolen from an old building at the corner of Spring Grove & Arlington.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

Raise hell! Since this concerns the entire community, is dealing with public funds and which the outcome of the tender is to save lives, this should be centre stage, being as loud, obnoxious (to draw attention onto itself) and attention-seeking as possible, so to speak.

I'd drop an email and phone call to all of the media outlets covering the affected areas first (without a URL in the email, avoids spam filters) letting them know about this issue, then in conversation, provide the link to this forum thread.

This needs to be brought out of the realms of our niche discussion and into the minds of those this system is going to protect. It would be absolute lunacy to keep this quiet.
