Has anyone ever seen an STH-10 like this?

Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:30 pm

This is the STH-10 I've heard all my life. It's located about 3.5 miles from my house, and it took me this long to get pictures of it. Talk about procrastination!

Well anyway, as you can see, it has a Darley-looking cap on top of the motor. It's single phase with a slow windup and a lower max RPM that makes it sound like a 10 port. It might be the eeriest sounding siren I've ever heard echoing through the valley.

Sorry about the crappy pictures. I couldn't make it there before the sun went down yesterday.

Are there any other STH-10s out there that look like this? I wonder who made this one.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had the Darley name on it.

They probably covered the motor with the top of an old Darley, or made a cover out of a salad bowl.

No, I haven't seen any like that.

Are you able to get a video of it sometime? :)

I know that siren its in Kittaning Trail, Blair County Station 14, and the cover was added so the top of the motor would be protected from rain, snow, etc.
Btw there are other STH-10s with odd motor covers like in Acosta, Somerset County, and something seems to be missing on Cherryhill Twp's STH-10.

You're correct. This is the siren I said I was going to take pictures of two days ago in the Blair county thread. I thought it might be some sort of improvised motor cover. I just immediately think Darley when I see that "bowl" shaped thing on top. The fact that the eyebolt is still there makes me think it could possibly be original.

And Thunderboltlover, I have wanted to record this siren my whole life. Nobody tests their sirens around here, and I don't know anyone at the station, so I'd have to contact someone and hope they will do a special test for me. I'm going to try, though. I run a recording studio, and I've been wanting to record a siren with my gear for as long as I've had it. The only thing that has held me back is having to travel to do it, but that isn't such a problem now. Plus, I now have friends in several local VFDs that can help me out in getting them to do a test so I can record it.

I'm probably the only "old" person on this whole board that hasn't ever seen or been up close to a siren while it's sounding, and I've been a part of the online warning siren community in one way or another since 1998.
