The noises all started a bit late; about 9:15 IIRC. They had pretty good fireworks, and also the 50-cal anti-aircraft guns... It was LOUD! If you didnt' hear it, it must have been the fact that the peninsula was in the way. It was all on the down slope facing the harbor.

BTW: I have been calling the LA Federal 500's "500-AT" based on somewhere I must have read or heard that model number, but I see that you and others are saying 500-T... Are there two versions, or was I off on this ?

The siren has a faulty gearbox, so it won't rotate... Hope you can make it next year!

Thanks! Actually, the siren was supposed to be in alert mode, but I talked Bart into manually wailing it. He was a bit reluctant to do it that way because of concern that it would put a heavy load and overheat the phase converter.

Charles,

Yer definitely a freak! a siren freak! great pics and video! :D I was wondering about the slow windup until you mentioned the phase converter.I guess that museum is'nt wired for three phase huh? while watching those videos I was thinking there's no substitute for direct line
voltage.but since you mentioned the phase converter it makes sense. The shop I rent is wired for three phase but I'm no electrician And I have no idea which is the third or wild leg so I've been reluctant to drag the sd10 up there & hook it up.I've always wondered if three phase from a building would make the motor run at full speed like say regular line voltage...Things to make you go Hmmm..... :?

Direct 3 phase will make it spin up MUCH faster than a converter. Take a look at John Kord's site & video:

Yes, that siren is NOT small!

Kay looks pretty happy there. My Wife would be so bored at something like that.

Does anyone have an idea as to when this Model 500AT was manufactured by Federal? I am thinking that it's from the early 1960s. as the projector delivers a wider beamwidth than the Dundee Twp. Fire Dept's 500AT. Nevertheless, it's a nice sized siren.

As far as I know the City Of Los Angeles 500 -T or AT sirens :?
were all installed by the Mid ? 1950's with plenty of SD-10
to complement in built up areas.

Boy, when that 500T starts up it sure blows those hand sirens out of the water. :D
