Federal 500AT sounds at '42 WWII LA air raid re-enactment

Sun Feb 25, 2007 9:30 am

This is an addendum to C. Bryant's post "Cold war SIREN for A World War two Party ?"

As I mentioned in his thread, my girlfriend Kay and I attended the re-enactment tonight of the Los Angeles air raid scare of 1942 at Fort Macarthur near San Pedro.

Their museum has two SD10s and one 500AT. They decided to use the 500AT tonight, and it was a big hit! I got to spend some time talking with two of the key figures in this event; Joe Janesic and Bart (sorry I didn't get his last name). Bart was in charge of setting up the siren for the event. After striking up a conversation with Bart, he gave me the thrill of the year by asking me to PUSH THE BUTTON when the time came to sound the siren :P :P :P !

It didn't take much to talk me into it!

Here are a few photos taken prior to the sounding, and there are three MPEG videos: First one is of the startup, the second one is of the siren in attack wail. The final one is of the wind-down.

If Joe or Bart happen to read this, here's a BIG thank-you for the extra hospitality you offered Kay and me :D

TO PLAY VIDEOS: Evidently, you need Macromedia Flash, and/or other player. These are all hosted at Photobucket.

The Startup http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m174 ... I_0051.flv

Attack wail http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m174 ... I_0052.flv

The wind-down http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m174 ... I_0053.flv

*not sure what all programs will play these videos, but I am able to see them with Windows Media Player. I have also played them on my Mac G4 notebook with a free download of Macromedia Flash. If you still have trouble, please go to Photobucket and see if they have a free player download for whatever operating system you're on...

I use this free FLV Player!:

Awesome clips, does the siren look to be wobbling from side to side in the attack clip, or is it the camera angle?

Awesome!
I love the wobbling of the projector of that 500T. Funny, the 500T didn't seem so loud in the video.

You have to have Macromedia Flash, as I found out this morning... There's a free download of it. I would go to the Photobucket home page, then see if they tell you what you need for your operating system. The 3 videos make up a HUGE file, or I'd offer to eMail them. (they're about 18MB total).

Thanks! The wobble was the siren, and probably because it was still on the pallet and not secured. Also, the belt was still on the rotating box, but the gears are all wrecked.

My god that thing is a monster! I had no clue they were that big! I was thinking that they were the size of a model 3.
Pyramid head walks into a bar... there are no survivors.
