You are correct, even the 2001's patent (which was for a Circleback 2001...) clearly shows the motor always goes in the cone.

I've heard conflicting information over motor placement on older models...thanks for clarifying. Does anyone know if it's the same motor used on newer 2001's? Just curious if replacement motors for older units are available.

I don't know about the pulsed signals. Both of those switches are wired into the controller. I don't see how it can be done.
