I drove to Wisconsin and back twice to get sirens.

So I would definitely do it. At least your saving gas in the S-10.

Go for it! At worse you can part it out and recover gas money. Remenber, if the siren is free .... you get what you pay for.

Is this the same 1003 that was on ebay a while back that had been removed from Little Rock?

I made a 600 mile round trip to Georgia to get mine, plus paid for the siren.

I'd be all over it if I were you!

No. It was removed in the 90s. The guy who has it now was going to rebuild it but after having the thing for 5 or 6 years he figures he'll never get around to it. He said he doesn't want to junk the thing.

After 3 weeks of bad luck and all kinds of junk going haywire I'm finally heading out to get the 1003 tomorrow on lucky Friday the 13th.
I'll be picking it up on Saturday and heading back on Sunday. I should be able to post some pics of it on Sunday night or Monday.
I'm off all next week so I'm planning on hooking up both 1003s (that is if this new one works ok) next week and running them (less blowers) in the garage at the same time.

I got back in one piece from Arkansas with the 1003 on Sunday. I had the entire siren with both RCM panels in my S-10. It was riding low in the back but not nearly as low as I thought it would.
I've got the solenoids temporarily hooked up and I'm planning on a chopper hi-lo test tomorrow. Wed the 18th.
I got really worried when I checked it over just after I picked it up and found that the chopper wouldn't move. There was also quite a bit of rust in the top of solenoid housing like it sat upside down after it was removed and water puddled around it and got into the housing. I was pretty dismayed when I saw that. I took it to the car wash to blast out the chopper and solenoid housing on sunday night and really got discouraged when I noticed it has a aluminum stator. I thought at the time it was probably a solidly siezed piece of junk. I got home from the car wash and immediately took the chopper apart. Well like always these old pigs amaze me. There was some junk in the chopper and it's a little oxidized but nothing bad at all. Monday I cleaned out the solenoid housing and to my surprise the solenoids, while having surface rust, weren't that bad. I thought upon first inspection that the laminations would be all swollen with rust and be completely ruined but they aren't. The chopper motor itself is in very good condition and the inside of the rotator box is good as well. Heck, the blower even turns easily. Here are some pics.

Good job on the solenoid restoration/paint :)
