A couple of New England photos

Fri Feb 04, 2011 8:15 am

So I took a return trip to Springfield last month to see if I could find any if the old MD sirens were still around. Unfortunatley the two school mounted ones I knew of remaining are now gone. So from my count, that leaves only two remaining mounted in the city. This one on top of the abandoned station 15 on Page Blvd. (Which I posted before)
Image
And the other one on top of the Verizon Central Office at Stearns Square.
(Worthington & Dwight Streets).
Image.
Both were painted blue, but the blue paint is clearly wearing off.

Another interesting find was out on Block Island here in Rhode Island.
Image
Not sure if it is used anymore or not. Rhode Island doesn't have much for sirens (except for the mystery Thunderbolt, which no one seems to know where it is...), and the directo here in East Providence, which I've posted pictures of before.

Great photos. Is Pepsi considered a fire-suppression material in Rhode Island?

Nice photo`s! there are about 5-8 mobil-directo`s left in springfield, here is a link to my MA siren map, it is zoomed in to the springfield sirens. they are the yellow ones in the view.

I also have pictures of all of them but the downtown one. Here is the link to the videos with the pictures in it.

Hey TBolt1000

That link is VERY handy. Thank you. I didn't realize there were so many others left in Springfield. I will have to get some HD photographs of them real soon, before they also get pulled. The ones on the Carew St school and Warner Elementary school were both pulled more recently. (I am pretty sure Warner's is gone.).

I do have two more for your map, both visible on street view.

This one on the front of this green building in East Otis. This used to be a fire station before it was moved.

The other is a 2nd Richmond siren! Mounted to a wooden pole at Summit and Swamp Roads.

Now if I could only find the mysterious, ellusive Rhode Island thunderbolt...

Your welcome, I`ll post the 2 other locations you gave me soon, thanks for those! With the springfield sirens, I have a feeling that they aren`t going anywhere for a while, the last one that was removed was from pottenger school in december of 2009. I think the next one to go will probably be the mary walsh school siren, since it is on the school. By the way, I pass warner school all the time and there is no siren there, I don`t remember ever seeing one there, do you have a picture of it?
Also, I think that model 5 you found is actually one of pittsfield`s sirens. I don`t know much about them but I do know they model 5/7s and fedelcodes.

I don't have a picture of it, unfortunatley. It was on the right hand side of the school, on the roof, and on this raised platform. I remember it had been painted all green. For years when I was little, I wondered what the heck that thing was. Someday it would be nice to find a list of all the old siren locations. The former Siren on Baliet School was still visible on Google Earth until they did a recent images update.

I was thinking that about that Model 5 siren, that it may be part of Pittsfield's system. But it is well within the Richmond town limits.
I don't know if Richmond sounds their sirens or not anymore.
There are definatley a few in Berkshire County. We had an old Model 5 on the top of the chimney at the fire station in Great Barrington, that we'd make it growl sometimes out of boredom. It was never used. (Great Barrington had an actively used Gamewell Fire Whistle until the chimney started falling apart, and it was retired.). There is a siren on a poll next to the Housatonic station, which i've heard used before.

I know of the siren in front of the housatonic station, is it still used?
that sounds pretty cool how the warner school siren was mounted. By the way, do you know if pittsfield still uses/tests their sirens.

Pittsfield doesn't use their siren system anymore. As far as I knew, most were gone. (Thanks to your link for showing me otherwise!)

I have asked about Housatonic's siren. I have a really good picture of it, Ill upload. (Actually I posted it on these forms, if you search my posts, you'll see it.)

I know Sheffield still uses their siren for fire calls, but it is hidden under a cupola (?) on the top of the station so you can't see it. The last time I heard it, it wasn't really that loud and it sounded "sick" to me.

I didn`t know sheffield has a siren, do you know if it is only used for mfire calls or if it is also used for a noon whistle? I`ll have to dig around for your picture of the housatonic siren, I know it is a model 5 other than that, I don`t know much about until know. Thanks for the info on Pittsfield`s sirens, I thought they were still used because it says on their website that they maintain the warning sirens, so I guess not then.

It seems like the Block Island roundback 2001 may still be used, if you look closely on Google Maps street view, it looks like it's pointed north.
