Early 1970s Thunderbolt Decal Artwork

Tue Apr 26, 2011 12:27 pm

I have been working on tweaking my master for the early 1970s Thunderbolt decal.

Without an actual decal to work with, and without knowing the "THUNDERBOLT" font, I have come up with my best idea as to what the decal should look like.

I am soliciting constructive ideas pertaining to how the artwork can be improved or made more authentic. Within reason and within my rudimentary painting abilities, I will attempt to incorporate any significant suggestions so that our restorations of Thunderbolt sirens from this era can be made as faithful as possible to their factory appearance.

The full size decal can be viewed by clicking on the image and selecting the "original" size from the available image sizes.

That looks pretty darn good. It all depends on how anal you want to be.

The "THUNDERBOLT" font is realy very close. The insides of the U, D, R, B and O all have a very very slight curve where it curves on the outside rather than squared off. The U could be a little thicker on the bottom. It should be the same thickness as the two uprights.

The waves should be thinner and the dashes should be thicker. The waves are about 2/3 the thickness of the dashes. You could also straighten the left and right ends of the waves a bit. They are at a rather straight angle rather than arching. They also terminate vertically. The center of the waves looks good.

Despite the criticism, I think that is a very, very good replica of the Thunderbolt logo. Great job!

I don't mind the criticism, after all, I asked for it.

I have made the waves smaller, and ended them with vertical lines. I have also made the horizontal lines that are in sets of three a little thicker.

The original at the top of the page might disappear, since I replaced it with the adjusted copy below.

Somehow, I got the firm idea that my Thunderbolt was installed in 1973 and it had this Federal Signal Corporation logo on it.

Your FS is close.
If you look at this ad, the FS has flat ends, your's are rounded.

It's hard to see in the photo. Buy me staring at it, it's clearly flat ends

And I've never seen a THUNDERBOLT outlined, it's always been one color- Red

But it's a great start.

Thanks, everyone for the comments.

I have incorporated EL1998P71's suggestions. It is looking better with each change.
