Attack signal

Thu Jul 12, 2012 5:16 pm

I just finished watching Ponca City, Oklahoma's siren test and discovered that they test their sirens in Attack mode. I just wondered if using Attack mode was a good idea just in the event that they actually need to use the sirens for something catostrophic. I doubt they'll ever be sounded for a real attack, but I was curious. Thoughts?

DeSoto County, MS (where I live) uses attack for tests and severe weather. They use alert for chemical spills and other related things. They also sometimes use fast wail for severe weather. The use of attack mode for what it was actually meant to signal has pretty much become obsolete for obvious reasons, and most cities have adopted it for other warnings, as it is more attention-getting than just a steady tone.

I think he meant a link to a video of Ponca City's test, not of Bethany's. All three of those videos you linked were his videos of Bethany's sirens.

In my 23+ years in Madison, WI, attack mode has never been used. No reason to, really. At this point I don't think people would notice the difference. Our sirens have never been used for anything besides tornado warnings.

We run the attack signal on the sirens in my county for tornado warnings. Simply because it's much more effective, carries farther, and doesn't blend in with the background noise.
